By the way, Buitoni is Swiss-owned since thirty years ago... Tortellini al pesto are the result.

Seriously, why? It's not like in America there's a lack of decent ingredients for actual Italian cuisine. Ok, getting hold of a good extra-virgin olive oil could be tricky and not very cheap, but apart from that... I mean, a lot of American tourists come to Italy and taste Italian cuisine first-hand, so giving the American customer a fake variant seems rather suicidal to me.

And there are plenty of excellent Italian restaurants in the states. For better or worse Americans have a taste for the uniformity of bland corporate food for the masses.
