What is the Worst Thing in the World?

The world admittedly has many horrible things in it: plague, hunger, death, terrorism, depression, murder, rape, and the list goes on.
Many people will say, often jokingly, “That’s the worst thing in the world.” However, I don’t think much thought has been given about what is truly the worst.
I personally think the worst thing in the world is unhappiness. Everyone can agree that happiness is good, and unhappiness is a result of most bad things occurring.
MODEDIT: If we're going to have this thread, please steer clear of answers like "white people" or "liberals" that single out people rather than ideas or actions.

Abuse isn’t caused by just one thing. It’s a multifaceted problem. Saying that it’s caused just by unhappiness is reductionist and demeaning.
Much in the same way that is demeaning to tell those who suffer from depression to just be happy
