I personally think the worst thing in the world is unhappiness. Everyone can agree that happiness is good, and unhappiness is a result of most bad things occurring.

Cruelty

Can mean anything from harassment to flat out torturing and harming others.

EDIT: Forgot to mention what the second-worst thing in the world is. I’ve learned this from my new job as a courtesy clerk at a grocery store. It’s one of these things:
  • Cleaning garbage cans and finding someone has thrown rotten milk away in the can and it keeps leaking out of the bag and all over the sidewalk and all over you. Even my cat looked disgusted when I came home from work that day.
  • When people don’t flush public toilets. This goes double when it’s more than just pee.
  • Cleaning up puke in the men’s room.
  • Public bathrooms in general.
  • Parents not controlling their bratty kids while in line to checkout.
  • Getting halfway through bagging and your customer suddenly remembers that she wants her groceries put in reusable bags.

Oh, and I might have to mention a rather petty thing: Toilets with just toilet paper.

I'm just that guy who loves to use a bidet to wash my parts. So, not having one means I don't use a public toilet that often for... larger businesses. And that's why I miss my home toilet so much.

Having an interest in Geography and World History and having learnt and conducting research for assignments. I have found out so much about the British Empire and its devastating, horrifying and genocidal implications and its enduring effects to this day. I hate admitting I'm British when in another country.

What actions can we actually take though, most of us whites and liberals have no actual economic or political power as the elites have all the power - currently conservative elites in the UK and US may I add. We need a worldwide shake up in governments with a progressive outlook ... ie a green party or corbyn labour government in every western country along with like minded CEO's of TNC's and MNC's who would be willing to significantly increase foreign aid budgets and actually try and make reparations to colonies of the past as well as the post colonial world such as states in Africa who the UK and others have in stranglehold over debt through failed SAP's and the like. As well as implement meaningful development goals. We need to have a miracle then.. thats all I can say, especially with the current wave of populism

The key is education. In the UK at least, the education system needs a radical shake up in its History and Citizenship education and to an extent RE. As a teacher I will make an effort to try and add to the insufficient and frankly poor content teachers are supposed to teach pupils through the national curriculum. Colonialism is presented as if in the past and everything is good and the third world are grateful for everything we have done for them. I 100% challenge that assumption as an educator and encourage all students to do the same and make it a priority. Most Brits probably don't know the extent of the horror the English exported all over the world, this is through no fault of their own but through a historical edcuation that isn't realistic and where teachers have to take it upon themselves to ensure that students understand that the BBC is just as much propaganda as the loudspeakers in Pyongyang are. Another example is the teaching of the holocaust as only very recently has the plight of the Palestines has even been considered, again inadequately.

So without education reform we have to rely on teachers that are willing to go the extra mile to impart understanding of history as tiny part of the past that is told from a subjective - usually US, UK or European viewpoint, as well as do their job by delivering the curriculum as laid out and deliver exam results - not an easy task. I truly believe that a realistic historical and geographic education and time to take its course will be the only solution to the worlds cultural intolerances and ignorance of what the realities are. Its not going to happen when the government insist pupis learn WW1 and WW2 in Key stages 3 and 4. and then colonialisms, korea, japan and vietnam are given a small section at key stage 4 where it is optional anyway. At younger ages study of the empire is usually a celebration of discovery, bringing progress and success of the east india company, you know the usual bullsh*t..

A school leaver at 16 or 17 in the UK is unlikely to know what indigenous means as the unimaginable scale of genocide and human destruction caused by the 'discovery' made by Christopher Columbus of America or claim of 'discovery' by the Dutch in early 17th century (although the Poruguese claim they in fact discovered Australia in 16th century - although unlikely) of Australia and the contuation of suffering certainly doesn't get covered in school - look at the recent Australian government response to the little children are sacred report only around a decade ago and the fact that the Spanish and Dutch still argue over who discovered the continent when neither of them did...

This complicit attempt by Western governments to downplay the bad stuff the west has done and continues to do in the world in order to sustain itself is by far the worst thing in the world.

Social progress usually has strings attached, those strings being authoritarianism and censorship.
Real progress doesn’t take sides.
