Nigeria couldn't defend their goal. Fuck Rojo. Fuck those missed shots. I believed, and they couldn't deliver. They haven't delivered to anyone since 1994, and it seems they professionally disappoint.

There was like 1 or 2 times where Nigeria didn't aim right towards the goal. IT WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM!!!!!
Also, actually, Nigeria did defend their goal pretty well. There were times when Argentina was really close to making a goal and then Nigeria kicked the ball out of range.

Only caught the last 30 minutes with my brother, but That bald/bearded fella for Argentina did the same.

Some skin of your teeth shit right there.

We got a text from my dad saying the Iceland game had gone 2-1 and there was a shocked moment where we were convinced it had gone Iceland's way. Would've been a helluva sob story that.

Sad to see Nigeria go allraedy. Not the team to go deep into the tournament, but they where a decent team.
Argentina.... They really have the names to go deep. I'm curious if they have found their pace now. They meet the underperforming (but winning) France on saturday. That game depends on who finds it's pace... In the quarters waits Uruguay or Portugal.

Croatia with 9 points out of the group stage to meet Denmark next and probably Spain in the quarters...

Nigeria... it was nice seeing you. Maybe next time.

Argentina, that was okay. You can do better.

Nigeria has lost every time it encounters with Argentina during World Cups. But they were a bit of a challenge. The VAR couldn't help them tho

You mean Nigeria, the side that has qualified for 6 of the last 7 World Cups, made it to the last 16 in 2014 and won ACON in 2013?

Very harsh on them, especially if 1994 is your measure considering the team have matched both of the achievements from that year in recent times. Is them losing to Croatia and Argentina that much of a surprise anyway? They are worse than both. I thought the team was absolute rubbish anyway so putting in some good performances against Argentina and Iceland should be considered a real positive.

Argentina looked a lot better today, especially in the first half, with Messi getting more of the ball playing on the wing and drifting inside and Banega doing better distributing balls (though on balance, I still liked the Nigerian midfield better). Pavon did great when he came on, and the combination of him and Messi would be a scary prospect as a defender.

And even so, Nigeria could have done better, and I'm disappointed for them. It was always hard to see them make it out of a group with Argentina and Croatia in it, but they came pretty damn close. It's the terrible performance in the first game that killed them, not how they played tonight.

So now it's Argentina v France, and that'll be a very interesting match. Two teams that have all sorts of talented attackers, but haven't really worked out a way to make it all gel. I'd say France, on balance, on account of a stronger midfield and Argentina's defense being more dodgy... but I would argue that France really need their first-team fullbacks to start playing if they want to win this thing.

I'd say Croatia should beat Denmark in the other R16 match. The question was whether they could form a team that was at least equal to the sum of its parts. I wasn't sure, but I think they showed that they could.

Sad to see Australia out. Not surprised, ultimately (no goals in open play, and a defense that you wouldn't call rock solid either), but disappointed nonetheless. Let's see if having Graham Arnold as a coach for a number of years will help get the best out of what talent there is.
“Every age and generation must be as free to act for itself in all cases as the age and generations which preceded it. The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies. Man has no property in man; neither has any generation a property in the generations which are to follow.”

I was in France in 2016 and their fans were superb, and the thunderclap is brilliant in person. Iceland bandwagoners are pretty cringey though :p you see the clap copied here in England often and (my club Wolves was very guilty of this after we signed Bodvarsson) it sounds more like a pack of mentally-impaired seals than a viking clap.

Next set of games will be South Korea - Germany and Sweden - Mexico, because apparently someone wants to get me up very early tomorrow morning out here in the American west.

A bit nervous - I think Germany is fairly safe to go through, given the circumstances, but avoiding Brazil looks pretty difficult and requires some luck on Sweden's side - but not too much, because tiebreakers are a thing. They just need to crush the Koreans regardless, but I'm still hoping for a Sweden victory so that the Germans can dodge a gauntlet in the knockout. The best team should win regardless, but... an easier road is an easier road.

Ha. My Vikings did the same thing (although Iceland's team expressly gave it to us). I was part of the "skol" clap at US Bank Stadium this past season with my fellow Vikings fans. We are definitely not up to Icelandic standards!

The population of Iceland basically all lives in one small village so it's easy for them to get together and practise.

Literally the only time I'd ever cheer for Iceland - because fuck Croatia. Still salty about their astoundingly disgusting style of the late 90s - so of course they lose. Typical.

Yes, chances are this has been reported already but this is a repeat for those that are not informed.

Colombia 3 to 0 against Poland.

There were about 35.000 Colombians in the audience at the Kazan stadium and only 3000 Poles.
Story on the overflow of Colombian fans in Kazan - https://polandinenglish.info/37785609/b ... mbian-fans

They also say there were thousands of Mexican fans at the game in which Mexico played.

Too bad that Peru lost to Australia 0 to 2.

It seems many Colombians found cost cutting ways to get there. This included flying to Spain and traveling via trains to Russia. Other Colombians found airline bargains but they had to fly into a few different cities and make flight connections with the journey ending in Russia. In all, the fans saved about 60% or more on traveling to the games. Other Colombians already living in Europe incurred less expense.

Petition for tickets for the games from Colombians amounted to 87786 fans. There were four million tickets. The largest petition for tickets were from Germans, Argentinians, Mexicans, Brazilians, Poles (only 3000 showed up in Kazan), Spanish and Peruvians. Then came the Colombians followed closely by the US and Netherlanders.

Brazil to draw with Serbia, and it might be a Swiss win against Costa Rica or a draw if they choose to rest players.
