Some were truly excited and having hope of a resolution. As conflicts go, this one has been dragging since the mid 1950s. It would have been great to see, finally, an end to it. However, historically, NK is always doing this so many of us weren't hopeful about it.

To be fair, running joint military exercises on the peninsula during such a tenuous period, while negotiations and meetings are going on, is damn bloody stupid. While I was weary of the current situation improving significantly, it is a pretty damn stupid idea to do so given that such military exercises are pretty much explicitly for the purposes of preparing for conflict on the peninsula, which would invariably involve the North. Just when I think the administration can't possibly get dumber, they pull a stunt like this that reaffirms that we live in a new, shittier and more idiotic reality

No it's not.

There have been multiple instances (the most prevalent was the one between the meeting between Gorbachev and Reagan) where leaders and diplomats were having regular diplomatic talks while military war games were being conducted.

North Korea is just being North Korea at this moment.

North Korea is run by an irrational man-child. We have a rather historic moment currently, where North Korea seems more willing to be at least somewhat reasonable than in the past. Is it possible, if not likely, that if it wasn't this it would be something else that sets him off? Sure. However, such a tenuous position requires the utmost tact to try and make it succeed.

Why the fuck would south korea and the US decide to do military exercises, knowing how north korea would react if south korea was about to seal the deal? Ohh that's right, because the US doesn't necessarily want peace. They want another puppet on the border with China. Some day we're going to have to learn our lesson the hard way. When will the world finally say "you know what? I'm sick of the US, sanction them completely." Trump needs to stop alienating our allies too, before they abandon us. We just might be on the path towards becoming a hermit state if the human cheetoh can't get his act together.

If I were in charge, I'd fund North Korea's electric grid and interweave it into South Korea's power grid and vice versa, that way their own prosperity is dependent on them getting along, maybe even laying the first of the foundation for a unified Korea. I think climate change is a bigger problem, and an North Korea is probably the only industrialized country on earth with an undeveloped power grid. This is their chance to become a green energy model for the world. If trump had any sense, he'd deal with korea in way that created peace but also allowed him to take credit for "saving the world", dealing blows to two issues at once.

A 6.3 civilization, according to this index.
Magiscience/FanT/FT
Theme/Aesthetic: Think of Theatre Masks, jewelry and cult-like robes, and make a sci-fi country out of it.
Government: Think democratically elected pope, except it's an unorthodox cult.
People: Traditional, Reserved, Soft-speakers.
Elites: Fine wines, wax candles, hallways of gold, violet, ruby, emerald. Parties inspired by the Greek God Dionysus. A conservative, elegant, mardi gras all day, every day.
Common Folk: A contrast to the above--Dark, medieval style alleys. Small, cold, metallic apartments, prone to collapse on terrestrial worlds, or platforms prone to falling to the depths on jovian ones.

Might have to do with the fact that the US economy is a cornerstone of the world economy, kind alike how nobody will sanction China despite them encroaching more and more on their neighbors. Anyway, I doubt these negotiations would go anywhere anyway, so calm down.

Like that matters? Exceptions have been made time and time again everywhere, and let's be real here, the US really doesn't care about mandatory stuff, it does whatever it wants to do when it wants to do it. Point remains, holding the military exercises was a terrible move by South-Korea and the US.

That isnt what annoyed NK. It is the fact SK agreed not to do it as it seems backwards, when peace is being discussed. They felt as though the South had gone back on its word
