Well the KPD didn't, they were too busy languishing in camps to join in. May as well blame the Japanese Communist Party for Poland, for all it's worth.
Also it's for real, the KPD literally thought "ok well when folks get tired of this Hitler fellow they'll definitely vote for us next election". Not the smartest move anyone's ever made.

Ah, well, I mean, that's a fair point.

centrally planning international politics is a lot like centrally planning an economy: the Soviets couldn't do either. The KPD attempted to break third period policy a handful of times, and if they did without breaking ideological continuity a lot of folks get away with it. It was the SPD who refused. I will admit that they were probably trying to blackmail the SPD into compromise by aggressive vote splitting but hey, politics used to be rough. KPD were in a precarious position, not rocking the boat was no guarantee of not getting gunned down later. And, come to think of it, neither was rocking it, but hey: politics used to be rough.
I can say that much of modern liberal democracy: I'm not currently in a position to be gunned down. That's actually quite nice.

I agree. We can't even agree on what "left" is, let alone any significant policy.

You can get certain sections of the left to cooperate on certain issues. On others they can cooperate with people outside of the left.

The whole of the left coming up with a unity program? How would we agree on the size of state, whether economic activity should be coordinated by workers cooperatives, the state, or private individuals (taxed to fund a welfare safety net), the balance between national and international focus, the foreign policy? It's a mad idea which could only be achieved if one section was strong enough to dominate the others and force them into line. I suppose abusive relationships contain a certain form of unity.

they exist. Even more: sometimes they win entire seats, maybe even 2. A few rare ones get double digits. They're on their way to being real parties in a decade or two.

That's quite wrong, Stalin knew international support could easily turn toward Franco if Spain was on the verge of becoming fully communist. Even France would have cut off support if they didn't think restoring the liberal republic was possible.
