I was generally under the impression that like Hitler, the guy behind "Prussian Socialism" (Prussianism?) had no idea what socialism was, and just thought it sounded cool so he used it in his ideology's name.

Yep. He called his party a socialist workers' party and put his flag on a red field to fool commies/socialists/labor into voting for him. He made the three colors the same three as the imperial flag and called his party a German national party to fool conservatives into voting for him. He slapped a big giant symbol for "muh indo-europeans" on it to get more votes from proto-nazis.
