Even so, the loyalty was mostly to the Nation itself rather than the Republic as an entity (which is why Napoléon had such an easy time once he took over.)

No, I just have a very Hobbesian take on society and see a strong State as the best way to ensure the prosperity and happiness of the population when Anarchy only bring despair and slaughter.

What would lead you to believe people are inherently good? Being good or bad takes conscious effort, I'd think humanity's inherent state is neutrality and amorality.

Humans naturally tend to do acts that are good, regardless of whether they learned them from others, such as sharing, or just helping people in general. Badness is learned, unlike goodness and egalitarianism.
