The free market has ruined art because it pays better to cater to the lowest common denominator. There's a place for the free market in the arts, but there is also something to be said for funding ventures for the artistic merit of the project.

In any case, just putting it out there, Athens is still a city. Sparta, on the other hand, was refounded less than a century ago and currently consist of broke rustics.

No. First of all, Arts aren't necessary, and second of all, if they can't survive on their own, they shouldn't.

To be fair, many artists deemed the greatest (e.g. Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Hieronymus Bosch) were well-paid.

They were paid by patrons though, not by government. My main point against govt funding for arts is because of the very possible use of it as a way to create some sort of cult of personality, or at least serve for political manipulations. Here in Brazil for instance you had Carnival movements rarely criticizing the govt until it cut funding -- by 50% I think. Jeez, you should've seen the anger erupting out of it

Technically clothes aren't necessary in warmer climates, but people still wear them.

And I disagree. Art in some form is necessary for most societies to function. Architecture, for example, relies heavily on art. Without it, we wouldn't have buildings...

Technically it is. We only consider our culture not culture because we live in it.

Nah, ask any tourist here if they think a hot dog is culture, get a load of the look you'll get. Our view of culture is why we shall never bridge the gap of sallivating sauce and sautee.

The government should fund education, up to the highest level. Education which includes the arts. If this is done, the arts would not need to be funded, likewise if it's not, funding the arts alone would be wasted with very few people there to appreciate them.
