Imagine it's 1977. You are a 51-year-old DIYer from Pasadena, looking for a new coupe utility or compact truck after your 1960 El Camino gave up the ghost. It has to be reliable and offer good practicality. The options are:
- 305 ci Chevrolet El Camino,
- 305 ci GMC Sprint,
- 302 ci Ford Ranchero,
- 2.2 Toyota Truck,
- 2.0 Datsun 620,
- 2.0 Mazda B2000,
- 2.3 Ford Courier,
- 1.8 Chevrolet LUV.

Which one would you buy? I'd get the Toyota.

Kinda late, but Sergio Marchionne, the man behind FCA, Fiat's 500 line and Alfa's performance revival is dead.

Mike Manley, the head of FCA North America, Ram and Jeep, will succeed him.

So yesterday evening I first saw a Peugeot Boxer van fail to stop before an Opel Astra hatchback and rear-end it, then someone called the police, paramedics and fire service, then the paramedics and fire trucks had to get out from a busy, jammed street, and then rainfall flooded the road and the cops had to get the damaged vehicles off the road so they wouldn't get flooded.

It escalated.

Possible "Hellcatization" and "Renegadization" - creating a stronger brand image and branching out into emerging or high-revenue sectors.

This will be the extension of Marchionne's work.

And as much as Marchionne loved the Viper, it wasn't much of a business case. Performance trims are a better way of appealing to the muscle crowd, as they don't require developing a new car.

I didn't expect it, considering milking the LX for what it's worth is a more profitable venture. Even after four fullsize sedans, two fullsize wagons, one pony car, five "performance" models, two "really fast" models and one "you have to be crazy to buy it" model.

There still is stuff to make: something above the Demons, Charger Demon, 300 Hellcat & Demon, Challenger convertible, Charger coupe or offroady sedan, wagon, crossover...

No Hemi passenger cars past 2019. The Challenger is apparently going to be replaced by a Giulia chassis Barracuda.

I'll wait until Fiat-Chrysler says something first to make a conclusion, but it would make sense they replace their 90s Mercedes derived LX platform with an Alfa Romeo platform to keep it fresh.

At least it is something different. Too many of today's cars are carbon copies of each other, even across companies.

What books do you think should be on a "gearhead's bookshelf"?

Some of my nominations:

- Bob Lutz - Car Guys vs Bean Counters,

- Jeremy Clarkson - various car review books,

- as for the non-strictly-car book - John Steinbeck's Grapes Of Wrath.
