Really thought that Le Mans this year was going to be a Porsche/Ford show with both fielding four cars each, but one thing I didn't expect to see is the Aston Martin grabbing the pole position.

In a 24 hour race pole isn't as crucial as it would be in a shorter race, but I'm not use to seeing Aston Martins actually show up. With one each of a Corvette, Aston Martin, and Ferrari it's still likely to be a Porsche/Ford show, though. Also I think there's another qualifying session.

Also, hadn't actually read about the new Hypercar Prototype Formula that will replace LMP1. Seems like a weird hybrid of prototypes and the GT1 era, which was pretty epic right about the time it got out of hand. Aston Martin (again) is the first to commit with a Valkyrie based racer. Really hoping for a Porsche customer racer like the old 962 days.

Speaking of Le Mans, I just saw that Ford is pulling the plug on the factory team.

Odd timing with essentially a bit propaganda film coming out about their heroic GT40 program where I'm guessing they condense the 67 and 68 Le Mans where the Mk II was the Shelby design with the '66 where they were driving a British reworking of a Lola.

The three Chip Ganassi Fords are running in a pack behind the leaders, Porsche-Ferrari-Corvette-Porsche-Porsche. The Aston Martins are in the back but they're all on the same lap, six hours in.

I'm sure things are happening in Prototype but I'm not keeping track as much. GTEAm is Ford Ferrari and then a Porsche a lap down.

I remember a few years back when a Peugeot prototype took out a 'vette competing for the lead. Watching the crew replace the entire rear end of that car in 15 minutes was one of the bet Le Mans moments I've seen.

Bah, what the hell, I leave to do a little busking and I come back and a Corvette is in the lead and the Porsches have fallen back? What's this bullshit. I know one of the Porsches had to have its exhaust replaced.

Well, the Corvette got caught in the pits during a caution and lost the lead and the gap to the Porsches. Good news for the Porsches, great news for the Ferrari that took over the lead. But, it's Jan Magnunssen in the Corvette. So...gonna be a fight. Also, apparently, the Ferrari only has another three laps in it. But has a three minute lead. Herm.

Oh lordy, an hour to go and the race is on in the GT classes.

The Ferrari is still in the lead with the Porsche less than a minute back but only an hour to close it.

The Ford GT that leads GTEAm got a penalty for spinning the tires out of the pits, allowing the Porsche behind him to close...and that's being driven by fucking Jörg Bergmeister. Former factory driver and badass Bergmeister. Five seconds now separate them with an hour to go.

The lead LMP1 just had a puncture but the only car challenging it is also a Toyota.

The only thing I kind of care about in LMP2 is the Jackie Chan car that looks like the best it can get is 2nd in class.

No sleeping for me.

Bah, the Ferrari held on. The first win in five years, 70 years on from their first.

The Ford GT in GTE Am held on as well, Bergmeister played it safe for championship points (the Ford isn't in the WEC).

GTE Pro Ferrari Porsche Porsche (Corvette ended 9th, the Fords were behind the Porsches including hometown hero Joey Hand in the 4th place Ford)

GTE Am Ford Porsche Ferrari Ferrari Porsche.

Toyota won basically uncontested.

Jackie Chan 2nd in LMP2.

That's it for LMP. Next year it's hypercars. If I read the rules right, also tunnel bodies can come back.

Back to talking about boats or what cars people would buy under strangely specific circumstances.

It's not really a good idea when you're in an endurance race and need to make your tires last as long as possible though.

It's not really a good idea when you're in an endurance race and need to make your tires last as long as possible though.

It serves the same function of warming the tires, you don't lose a lap by burning out the tires. The rule is in place because pit space is tight with 60 some odd entries across four categories and with cars fishtailing out there's too too much of a chance of injury.
