I mean, the Islamic Republic isn't some sort of paragon of democratic ideals as well.

I find it intriguing that most Iranians want freedom and secularism, but their governments are never one or the other.

It's funny because, well, for all their faults, Reza Shah was responsible for modernizing Iran in every sense of the word (during the Qajarid Period, we literally didn't have a standing army, any form of social security, almost no legislature (until the last few years, at least) and the country was basically a feudalist shithole). And Muhammad Reza, at least at the beginning, was trying his best to bring democracy to Iran, and even afterwards, as he started getting more and more absolutist (until he essentially illegalized all other parties with The Rastakhiz) he still improved civil and personal freedoms considerably.

And Reza II (The current head of the dynasty) is a pretty cool guy, though he doesn't even sound like a monarchist most of the time

There is actually very little difference between the Pahlavi regime and the current Mullah regime. They are both Fascism with different names. It's difficult to find true supporters of democracy in Iran, or even to find mentally stable and normal people. It's a country divided between Nazis and Communists. The most moderate one plans genocides by hobby.

It's more of a personal thing. I can't bring myself to at all like the man who ran the SAVAK. Especially not the SAVAK that killed all of my father's brothers and tried to kill my father.
