Where did I say that? There's a shortage of workers, and a surplus of jobs. The jobs the prisoners would fill wouldn't do much to fill in the gap, it just robs natives and the harder working immigrants from contributing to the GDP voluntarily.

That certainly suggests that slavery does nothing to improve the seemliness or the character quality of the enslaved, regardless of whether or not it saves money for anyone.

It also doesn't save a meaningful amount of money for the capitalist, because they acquire additional costs of supporting the slave as a human property, which wage employers do not suffer.
