Jobs and occupations

Postby Kartofian » Fri Apr 20, 2018 12:39 pm

Hello denizens of NSG!

Most of us probably have a job, maybe more than one. We do stuff there, but is it the stuff that we want to do...

When you were a child (or at an equivalent stage of development for whatever being you are), who did you want to be when you grew up? Were your dreams successful? Did they change? Are you in the process of pursuing them? Would you like to share your current job?

My younger self wanted to be a paleontologist, that dream was crushed the moment I realized that there weren't that many dinosaurs left to dig up.

At some point, I wanted to be a fireman -- those were good times.

Currently, and for the foreseeable, I am a full time student.

What do NSG posters do? Besides, you know - this.

Currently unemployed, full time student. Want to get a job soon though, for the experience.
I also wanted to be a paleontologist when I was little, or an Egyptologist.

I am a full-time student.
I had to quit my part time job because the college I go to ain't in the same city were I actually live. I did have a part-time job on campus, but that one only goes for a semester.

I plan on getting a job or internship/shadowing/whatever during the summer.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a park ranger.

Now (and also when I was still pretty young), I plan on becoming a doctor. Not sure what kind though. However, I've also found myself becoming more interested in machines like cars and stuff.
But I still plan on becoming a doctor.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

When I was younger I wanted to be in the military, then I wanted to be a police officer, and then I wanted to be a fireman. For the longest time I wanted to be a train engineer.

As of right now Ive been in the military and currently working some odd jobs until I can get back in the military or become a fireman

Wanted to make games from an early age. Later realized I wanted to make games because I wanted to tell stories, which led to me figuring out that my primary passion lay in writing. Was bamboozled by social standards into entering college for a time, but it wasn't for me. Worked fast food and retail, hated both. Currently, I write for below minimum wage.

Currently I think I want to be a history teacher (college or high school, I like kids well enough but I don't want to deal with them all the time). Or an artist. I also would love to be a director, but that's more of a pipe dream given that I know nothing about that line of work nor do I have any talent in it as far as I know.

I'm currently a student, but I've worked two jobs beforehand. Back in the first half of 2016 I worked as a dishwasher for a restaurant. Yes it was as bad as it sounds. Then last spring and summer I worked at Lowe's. And that was even more horrible.

Never knew what I wanted to be growing up. I don't have too many aspirations. I'll just have to see what my options are once I finish school.

Currently a full-time student, with a contract with the Royal Navy for 10 years when I graduate. I worked in a fish market for 4 years before that, which was pretty nice.

I wanted to be a chicken farmer growing up. Still do. No idea why.

Where the hell do you get a 10 year contract? The longest I’ve heard of is 6

Canada has a Regular Officer Training Program where they pay for your education if you serve as an officer for 10-15 years afterwards (all officers here need a degree now). My contract was 10.

Is the American/UK/other NATO country system different?

In the US, the contracts are shorter I think.
And to be a Commissioned Officer in the US Army, I'm pretty sure that you do need a degree. Not 100% certain on that.
