The Hangar: the Aviation Discussion Thread

Postby Pax Nerdvana » Sun Apr 15, 2018 11:35 am

I love aircraft and aviation in general, and I've never seen a thread here specifically devoted to flight and aviation on this forum before. I would love to be a pilot, or at least work with aircraft in some manner. This thread's purpose is the discussion of aircraft, aviation, and spacecraft. I'm especially interested in WWII military aircraft, one of my favorite aircraft is the P-51D Mustang. What airplanes do you guys like? Would you want to be a pilot?

I remain of the opinion that the F-14 Tomcat is the most beautiful aircraft ever designed, honestly. As for being a pilot, I've thought about it before, though I certainly don't have time to get a license right now.

I am currently retaking my light aircraft pilot license in France, because I didn't fly enough for it to be renewed automatically. As for aircrafts, I like a lot of them, but my 2 favorites are the Dassault Rafale and the F 4 Phantom

The F-14 is my favorite jet, but the P-51 is my favorite piston engined aircraft. I would love to get my license, but my eyesight is terrible, and I don't have the time or money.

Welcome friend. Being a pilot is fantastic - just don’t go into debt for it. It’s not lucrative until you get to very high levels.

Sadly to say, I haven't flown on an airplane in years. :( I would get my license if I had the time and money.

I actually once dreamed of being a pilot. Not a fighter pilot, but rather, just a commerical pilot. But my dreams were grounded when I realised that I have an irrational fear of heights.

With that said, I still have quite an interest with planes. My favorite all-time is still a B-2 Stealth Bomber, given its flat and unique shape.

If so you might consider a sport pilot’s license.

The B-2 looks awesome, like something out of a science fiction movie.

When I was still pretty young (~12 y/o? Give or take), I imagined a B-2 with front-facing lasers and machine guns. Only a year later then I realised that it was indeed a bomber.

I know what you mean. I used to imagine mounting a quad AA gun on a P-51D, when I was really young.

I once flew as a passenger in a WW1 biplane from a private airfield to an Air Show.. nothing makes you feel more like being in a tin can with nothing but the magic of whatever keeps a plane in the air than being in a flimsy tin can with the wind rushing past your ears.

I was petrified, and I've jumped out of planes before..

I would love to fly across the channel in a Spitfire though, it's not Dunkirk, I've always held them to be beautiful planes, they're the Jaguar E Type of planes.

Having said that my favourite is the A-10 Warthog, it just does what it says on the tin.

Honestly I'm more of a Sea and Space person, but when it comes to favorite planes I don't really have one, just the turreted ones from the World Wars. (It may have been a stupid Idea, but is seems badass)

Do be honest I wish maybe instead of building another stealth program like the F-35 and its competitor the YF-32 the US took both the YF-22 & the YF-23 and built on to just standard Navy specs. But If I had a plane to choose that was my favorite it would have to be between the YF-23, F/A-22, and the A-10 warthog. I'm also partial to the fictional F/A-37 Talon II from the 2005 movie Stealth.

Hello all. I had always wanted to be a pilot from a very young age. When I was a Webelo Scout, we visited a Japanese Ground Defense Forces unit that had UH-1 Huey helicopters. While sitting in the pilots seat, I vowed one day I would fly a Huey. I entered the US Army flight school (Initial Entry Rotary Wing training) in the early 1990's. I was qualified in UH-1's then tracked Cobras, the AH-1F, which I flew on active duty for 6 years. I joined the National Guard after 9/11, starting out in the UH-1, transitioning to UH-60 Blackhawk, and finally qualifying in the LUH-72 Lakota. I've flown in a lot of different environments, countries, states, over the ocean, in some of the worst (but legal) weather imaginable, and despite being terrified at times, I truly loved it.

Clearly the best aircraft from ww2 is the BF-109. Look at the kill ratio.
