What in God's name!?

I have no clue. I just grabbed the first disgusting sandwich that did not look like it had been sitting in the fridge for six months.

Behold, The Submarine Sandwich.

A sub sandwich is not actually a real sandwich if it's a split piece of bread.

Its still between two pieces of bread, no matter how disgusting. The hotdog is not.

I leave for now with one last message - if this is a sandwich, then there is literally no reason that a hot dog isn't a sandwich. As long as there are two lobes covering the sandwich, it doesn't matter if they're connected or not.

That's why the connected aspect is a blind alley.. it has no bearing on whether it's a sandwich or not. The key is whether you can eat it in a default cold state.

You can't eat a hamburger in a default cold state. You can't eat a grilled cheese in a default cold state.

Would it be a sandwich if we just cut the bun in half, so it is more of a sub?

And yet, Merriam-Webster dictionary sayeth:

Definition of sandwich

1 a : two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between
b : one slice of bread covered with food

Wait, so is pizza a type of sandwich then?

Yea. Between two.pieces of bread = sandwich, so cutting the buns would satisfy the equation.

Correct on the first, which is why a hamburger is not a sandwich.. incorrect on the second, you can eat a cheese sandwich but you can also toast it to create a 'grilled cheese' sandwich. You don't eat a hamburger then a grilled hamburger if you want. The default of cheese sandwich is cold.

On a more serious note I am neutral on this subject since a hot dog and sandwich is just a piece of food us humans eat to stay alive.

What if you don't have any buns so you use two slices of bread for your hot dog with ketchup and relish sandwich. Sometimes you run out of buns.

That looks more like what I'd call a pasty, like a Cornish Pasty, at a stretch I might call it a pizza bake.

I guess that also means bread and butter is a type of sandwich, right?

How about all open-faced sandwiches are not sandwiches, but every other physical object is a sandwich?

Based on the Merriam Webster dictionary, I’m not sure these are mutually exclusive terms.

Decent point, I might call it a hot dog sandwich but, again, you really have to cook the dog.. a sandwich can be eaten hot or cold.

Here’s another consideration-

If I cut the very edge off this pizza, so the upper and lower crusts were disconnected, would it be a sandwich?
