A dish or foodstuff where two or more slices of bread serve as the wrapper or container of some other food.

From this, a hot dog is not a sandwich as it is made up of one piece of bread, not two or more.

I think that hot dogs are sort of a subspecies of sandwich.

Yes, they fit the definition of being a sandwich, but they have their own unique characteristics. Traditionally, you'll eat a standard sandwich with two hands, although only one is required to eat a hot dog.
