Interestingly enough, despite the common assertion there are no atheists in foxholes, or people need belief in a heaven to be brave, most of the old religions did not have a pleasant view of the afterlife. The Greeks, Japanese, even Hebrews believed that the afterlife was a gloomy place and that it was preferable to live even in deplorable conditions than die.

Well, disbelieving in yourself making you an atheist conclusively proves you are a Sheep God.

Yes, yes it is.

So has anyone ever had their friends or family change their attitude once they found out that oneself was atheist? Specifically turn hostile? In my case I've been a non believing heretic since 4th grade and if my parents ever found out I wasn't Catholic like them I wouldn't put it past them if they kicked me out and cut all ties with me. As for friends, none really care.

My position is that there probably is no God, but I don't care either way.

That would be my family. My friends - pastor's daughter and Mormon - couldn't care less.

I mean I think if any family disowns a family member because they dare to follow/not follow a certain religion, then the problem is with the family, not the family member themselves.

But to actually answer your question, no, I wasn't in this kind of situation. My family are agnostic, the last believers in my family were some of my grandparents. None of my grandparents are alive anymore. The fact that I am atheist doesn't really bother anyone, but we don't really talk about religion in my family, it never comes up in conversation. Some of my extended family (aunts etc) are Catholic.

Hello there everyone. I’m not sure on how to introduce myself. Is there any discussions right now?

Hi. Feel free to outline your position on atheism or comment on or about it at any time. There's a slow conversation currently happening about people being ejected by their families for being non-believers, which is an unfortunate thing and a legitimate worry for many of us atheists.

Thanks for the welcome! In case any of you are wondering, (which you are likely not) I am Agnostic. About that family ejection thing, which seems screwed up. My immediate family are Agnostic. My ex-dad was a Christian until he stopped going. Despite the fact one of my Christian relatives yelled at me for a little incident when I was around... Five? Four? Six? Somewhere around there. Despite that little incident we’re still close.

Agnostic atheist or agnostic theist ?

I'm an atheist, and that's mostly because I just don't really care about religion. Some other people posted similar things already, and I know. I've just never had religious faith in me. I just don't feel religious.

I grew up in a completely secular family. I've never been to a place of worship before, except for a synagogue for my cousin's bar mitzvahs. And my school was also a secular public school.

I just don't really care about religion but that was my stance anyways.

Same here, basically. I never was religious and I never felt that it was something I connected with.

Me too. I've never had a religious experience, even slightly. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Is Naturalistic Pantheism a form of Atheism?

Are you trying to get Spinoza killed?

But seriously, it depends on how you define it. As much as Spinoza is called a naturalistic pantheist, I think he is better characterized as a panentheist.

Here, we have identified the exact point where skepticism throws the baby out with the bathwater. Naturalistic pantheism isn't a bunch of woo. It's a well-respected and interesting philosophical standpoint. One that I think is wrong, but worth more respect than you've afforded it. Spinoza was a solid thinker. Don't lump him in with the Deepak Chopra types.

Not necessarily.

There's nothing wrong with having reverence for the world. It's actually kind of part of not being a piece of shit.

Spinoza's great.

Panentheist though, I would say is more viewing God proper as distinct from the world in some way. Like Whitehead's God.
