Genesis 7:11 says that ‘all the springs of the great deep burst forth’, so it could be salt water too. Regardless, many fish would have gone extinct in the flood, had it actually happened of course.

But man, did you see all those myths from people around who just happen to live in areas not far form the sea about a flood that consumes the world while I ignore any people group that don’t have such a myth!?!?/s

I'm fairly certain that the myths about the great floods were based on real events (I suggest massive rainstorms as the culprit), but that they weren't anywhere near the magnitude described, and they certainly wouldn't be describing the same event.

That is about the same as I explain it, that several different flood events and myths were erroneously combined into one single event, either through inaccurate record keeping or poor interpretation/willful misinterpretation of said records.

Pretty much. Most human groups use lived by the sea, and sea levels have risked, as seen with the Red Sea and Doggerland, swallowing up areas where people lived, and then over home those morph from recasting regional floods to world wide floods that extinguish all life.

The great flood is a story about the end of the Ice Age and the melting of the polar icecaps.

Thousands of square miles of land suddenly disappearing underwater would be a big event in early human history

Considering the water levels rose sufficiently to cover the highest mountains it also killed all fish living in shallow water.
