The legislature of the US hasn't acted, this was the Trump administration green lighting a rule change to existing law by ATF.
It is now interpreted that bump stocks effectively allow for the conversion of a semiautomatic into a machinegun via allowing a user to artificially increase their rate of fire with the recoil action of the firearm as opposed to an actual manual squeezing of the trigger.

I say we strip the president of executive powers.
Anyway, there’s going to be a fight. And last I checked the ban doesn’t touch binary triggers or the sort.

While I disagree with the re-classification, since I don't own a bump stock, it doesn't affect me. I doubt the issue will be settled for years though, as the lawsuits will have to grind on through the various courts. The lawyers will get rich, though.

I wont be if Republicans lose in 2020. I also feel in the short term several people/organizations such as the NRA, GOA, and other 2nd amendment groups will file lawsuits to either hold the bill at bay or to overturn it on appeal.

Nothing like wasting taxpayer's 2 million dollars on a boondoggle just to spend on the word, "duh"
