Stephen Hawking's brief history in time is over..

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark,” he said.

He spoke also of death, an eventuality that sat on a more distant horizon than doctors thought. “I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I’m not afraid of death, but I’m in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first,” he said.

I read his book, can't say I could properly grasp it but it's clearly a major work. Do we have a Physics thread, if people can somewhat nutshell his contributions I'd be happy to see. Ultimately I think he was a pretty good ambassador for science in general as well as the ability to overcome severe constraints in life.

What thinkest ye?

Stephen Hawking's death

Postby United Massachusetts » Tue Mar 13, 2018 8:56 pm

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-43396008

BBC wrote:Physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76, a spokesman for his family has said.

The Guardian wrote:Stephen Hawking, the brightest star in the firmament of science, whose insights shaped modern cosmology and inspired global audiences in the millions, has died aged 76.

How does NSG feel right now about this? I'm deeply saddened, and I think most are by this news. Hawking changed physics forever, himself revolutionary in the fields of quantum mechanics and cosmology (particularly black holes)

I was just making a thread myself.
Found this gem regarding him from The Guardian:
Stephen Hawking, the brightest star in the firmament of science, whose insights shaped modern cosmology and inspired global audiences in the millions, has died aged 76.

Well damn. He had personal flaws but he advanced humanity more than most can hope to.

It's amazing he lived so long. rip.
The Creeping Barrage is the name given to a method of firing artillery. At the beginning of Trench Warfare the basic tactic was to fire lots of artillery at enemy trenches for a sustained period of time and to stop firing just before the infantry attacked. However this method wasn’t very successful as the German had built strong bunkers and were able to man the defences in the time between the bombardment ending and the infantry getting to the trenches. A solution to the problem of the time lag between the bombardment and the arrival of the infantry was to change the way that the artillery was fired. Instead of just aiming at the same target the creeping barrage moved forward at a prearranged pace.

I suppose we ought to be glad he lived as long as he did.

Let's hope he didn't just go to a pitch black void of nothingness like he always said concerning the afterlife.

I feel like This is on the level of Einstein's death. He left a black hole in history, Hawking radiating through time.

The death of intelligence. There's a social commentary.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be proof of a pan-Islamic plot and Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand, crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of mentally ill lone wolves who do not represent their professed belief system at all.
The probability of someone secretly participating in homosexual acts is directly proportional to the frequency and loudness of their publicly professed disapproval and/or disgust for homosexuality.
If Donald Trump accuses an individual of malfeasance without evidence, it is almost a certainty either he or someone associated with him has in fact committed that very same malfeasance to a greater degree.

Pretty good achievement to get a standard human lifespan with all the health problems he had. He was one tough cookie as well as being a genius.

This is terrible. Stephen Hawking was a man i greatly respected, and still do.

He's a space man now.
“It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed hungry person. True freedom can only be where there is no exploitation and oppression of one person by another; where there is not unemployment, and where a person is not living in fear of losing his job, his home and his bread. Only in such a society personal and any other freedom can exist for real and not on paper.” -J. V. STALIN
Ernest Hemingway wrote:Anyone who loves freedom owes such a debt to the Red Army that it can never be repaid.

Napoleon Bonaparte wrote:“To understand the man you have to know what was happening in the world when he was twenty.”

Cicero wrote:"In times of war, the laws fall silent"

He appeared in The Simpsons and Futurama, so I think he'd approve.

Bad puns. The sadness language of NS.

Rest in peace. Don't particularly think he deserves most of the praise he's gotten, but its bad manners to speak ill of the dead, so I won't say anything more now.

Coincidentally, actually the opposite. Today is Einstein’s birthday.

As you can see from the time stamps, both Bombadil and United Mass started threads at the same time. I merged them and the system put Bombadil's at the top.
