MI6 used to do something much worse to British defectors during the cold war. They'd let them live out the remains of their life in Russia.

I feeling like people aren't getting how serious this is. Someone just used a chemical weapon in a British city. If it was a state actor then it's an act of war.

More proof that a dedicated hostile state could smuggle bio-WMDs or nuclear weapons into every major city and we would know nothing.

We dont. And it is a horrible disincentive for an Russian to spy for the west when the western governments let this stuff slide.

Most likely not the FSB directly. Looks like the latest trend is employing private contractors for wet jobs.

Why has assassination by nerve agent become the latest fashion trend among assassins?

It can be concealed more easily than a firearm or a knife, and it is easier to deploy than a bomb. That's why I'd say "contractor" more than "FSB agent". Just guessing, tho.

What will be the consequences for UK-Russian relations?

Mostly nothing. No one weeps for double agents.

Did you need this as proof that security is just an illusion?

Nukes can be transported quite easily by ship. Just hide a nuke in a container ship, and you can hit basically every major seaside city.

It is very serious, I agree. It will get even more serious if any of the victims of this attack eventually die, not least the police officer that is still in serious condition in hospital.

I'm not sure where you're getting that. Litvinenko was internal security, then counter-espionage and then essentially a police man tasked with dealing with the Russian mafia. Like I said, more FBI than CIA. Or MI5 instead of MI6 to put a British twist on it.

Yeah, I always get confused but yes, Polonium-210 was it?

I think I remember why I confuse this. I mix Litvinenko with Markov. Markov was the one killed with ricin poisoning. Sorry.

Markov, Litvinenko, and now the attempted murder of Skripal. All on British soil. Seriously, MI5/MI6 needs to do a better job of protecting dissidents/people who have worked for them, they are going to get a reputation for being completely inept as far as protecting their informants is concerned.

Well, to be fair, the manner in which Markov was killed was rather exotic. A gas powered umbrella with a ricin poisoned pellet that was shot in his leg. I don't think they could've foresee that one.

With Litvinenko, however, they could have been more careful because he had been threatened, and 2 weeks before, Anna Politkovskaya was assassinated in Moscow, and he had been in contact with her. That being said, IIRC, Polonium-210 was, at the time, also rather exotic to use in poisoning people. So, I don't know. Perhaps we should cut the Brits some slack here.

Oh yes, I remember the spy that was found dead in a bag in his apartment, Gareth Williams. A forensic scientist said it was his opinion that an expert in the "dark side of forensics" cleaned his apartment, because the crime scene was so forensically clean. The bag was also sealed from the outside, I don't buy the opinion that he accidentally sealed himself inside it, which was a theory that was thrown around for a while...
