Oh yes, I remember the spy that was found dead in a bag in his apartment, Gareth Williams. A forensic scientist said it was his opinion that an expert in the "dark side of forensics" cleaned his apartment, because the crime scene was so forensically clean. The bag was also sealed from the outside, I don't buy the opinion that he accidentally sealed himself inside it, which was a theory that was thrown around for a while...
Gareth Williams was an analyst working for GCHQ. The story put out to the media at the time was that he died in some bizarre self sex accident. This did not ring true to me at the time. The coroners report rejected this explanation, and said that Gareth Williams was most likely unlawfully killed.
He was on temporary secondment to the Secret Intelligence Service. He requested a transfer out because he felt unconfortable in that environment. This lead was not pursued. The botched nature of the investigation, and the leap to a storyline which put all the shame on the victim are criminal acts in their own right.
It would not surprise me if his death had a significant impact on GCHQ recruitment at the time. It made a huge impact on me.
