Sports Mascots

Postby Anti-Social Darwinism » Tue Jun 23, 2009 11:21 pm

William and Mary College is in the process of adopting a food mascot since the PC police have declared that it is offensive to have a mascot from a human minority (I note the Vikings, the Highlanders, the Pirates and the Fighting Irish aren't on the chopping block yet).

I know we've discussed this many times before, but I'm still confused as to why people find it offensive to have their particular ethnicity used as a mascot? It really translates as a totem representing the abilities that people would like their teams to have - for instance, if there were a team called the Zulus, I would take that to mean profound respect for the fighting abilities and teamwork shown by the Zulu warriors when they trounced the Brits - I would in no way see it as a slur.

And, really, just how inspiring is "go, fighting asparagus?"

...why would they want to be food? Why not an animal or something?

My dad told me a story about when he was in High School, the mascot was named Johnny Rebel. Apparently the black community found it offensive and said it reminded them of slavery.

Ok, this was back in the 70s, and how could you have been reminded of slavery if you have never been slaves?

Honestly, I think people just want an excuse to bitch and moan.

WTF? Stupid idea I never understood why having a Native American was offensive.

Now as for Mascots, who came up with Asapargus? Why not use something else like an animal? What about the William and Mary Snakes?

But I must admit it is better than some of the stupid mascots/nick names I have heard for some recent professional teams such as "The Fury", "Power" "Storm" these are worse than Asapargus.

Why not just use "Spears"?

As George Carlin pointed out, football gets the fierce names, like "bears". while baseball has the "cubs".

Colleges like to go for the more aggressive football type image, it seems.

except for the enormously popular Oregon Beavers
http://blog.oregonlive.com/beavers/2007/07/benny2.jpg

and what do you do with such US soccer teams as the Fire, Crew, Union, or Earthquake?

How does Johnny Rebel translate to slavery?

You do have to remember, this happened in the South, and from what my dad tells me, he did carry a Confederate Naval Jack flag.

Oh yeah I was thinking he was a black man or something.

Still even with that, seems a bit stupid to me.

My favorite mascots are the Orofino Maniacs. Orofino happens to be the town in Idaho that hosts one of the State's two main mental hospitals. 8)

I just find their argument weak. "It reminds us of slavery!" "Ok, so...exactly what do you remember about slavery? Are you channeling your dead ancestor or something?"
