I'm quite fond of those little indulgences, though I don't partake in them. A moral person would avoid them anyway, an immoral person would find substitutes in the black market.

Which is why police actively pursue the black market.

The temptation should be more difficult to indulge, rather than being a multi-billion dollar industry that is pervades almost all of society.

I wonder.

There is definitely a point at the margins that moral people avoid immoral things and immoral people will find a way to get them.

But for the people in the centre, the law provides a steady hand. The real question is the ratio. If it's 10% moral people and 10% immoral and 80% centre, there's obviously real purpose for vice laws. If it's simply 50/50 they're totally pointless, yes.

In regards to my earlier comments, I mean't Romans 13:1-7, not 15:17

Making some immoral indulgences illegal just gives criminals something to make vast amounts of money with. Booze being a prominent example.

It also gives certain vices a 'forbidden fruit' mystique which attracts stupid teenagers to try it.

You can solve that through extreme forcefulness and indoctrination.

If society was made up only of top 10 percentile IQ people then anarchy would work fine.

But.

Fully one fifth of the population has an IQ below 88. And obviously, more than half have an IQ below 100. These people need to be controlled. It's good for them and it's good for the top 50 percentile too.

Bit far. I agree with the others though.

I think gambling in particular is something people don't really appreciate the danger of. (By gambling I don't mean poker and other activities that require some skill.)

In my experience working at an establishment where some forms of gambling were provided, few people partook, but most of those who did had obvious and serious problems. Gambling addiction is probably among the more destructive addictions out there, comparable to hard drugs imo.

There was a guy at the pub a while ago who dropped £300, more or less a weeks wages, on the slot machines in one night. Lost everything.

Indoctrination is just a less politically correct term for socialization, which is a desirable and natural process in any society. The problem with our society is that we treat delinquent and degenerate behaviors as normal and even desirable.

Abortion, gambling, casual sex, use of mind-altering substances (this one rates low on my list of priorities), interest loans, etc.

People with high IQs can abuse the system and act immorally as well. They're just probably better at it.

Interest loans? Never heard that one described as degenerate before.
