From a Marxist sociological point of view, capitalism is economic, governmental (political), and much more. In Marxist sociology, we generally avoid economistic (economically reductionist) definitions of capitalism.

I always noticed that business structures are not that different from government structures, my high school civics teacher once said that you can either be ruled by big government, or big business. He said he’d choose government every time. Business only needs to look after its shareholders and whatnot, but a government must look after the citizens as a collective group. The Soviet economy was still doing okay. What failed was the Soviet political consensus. People became more nationalist and didn't like the idea of being citizens of a supranational union.

I've explained several times in this thread why state capitalism doesn't fit the USSR's economy. There wasn't profit motive.

As a general rule, liberalism is not fundamentally critical of capitalism as a matter of principle. At most, it's critical of its excesses.
