I've associated with a large number of internet subcultures while not being one, and observed on the edges.
I was briefly a rent enforcer on second life.
Furries treated me like one of their own and were friendly. They were tolerant of me so long as I was tolerant of them. They tended to not care for social norms or popular trends, I got introduced to a few subgenres of music and such, some good, some not. When I needed a posse to impress the serious nature of a debt (I found that turning up with a gang tended to result in more payments because of social pressure or some shit, despite us technically being able to terminate someones data if they didn't pay, we preferred to get paid than resort to it.) they were usually prepared to come along and act disciplined and part of the organization, despite not getting a cut.
They paid their rent on time, and were not problem tenants. One was a high ranking member of our organization, and I briefly had a crush on her but it went nowhere.

I've never had problems with them. They're odd, distinct, and inoffensive in terms of causing trouble. They keep themselves to themselves, and their cultural norms don't fuck things up for other people.

I disagree. I would argue that they along with several other subcultures face institutional oppression, where their adherence is discovered. It's one reason why the progressive abandonment of universalism in principle is suspect, it skews away from live and let live, general statements of liberal values, toward arguing for the empowerment of specific subgroups.

Useful at times, provided the outgroup is included in negotiations as an equal partner, but no panacea.
