Having lived in Southern Appalachia for 4 years, most people I knew who grew up in that area proudly called themselves hillbillies. They are definitely a distinct ethnicity. It literally took me a year to understand their accent (without often asking them to repeat what they said over and over again) and their rather unique slang expressions.
