Well, I have exercise-induced asthma, ADD and Asperger’s so I don’t know if any of those problems disqualified me. My main issue with joining is that everyone was pushing that path onto me because I wasn’t doing well in college and was stuck doing part-time at a grocery store.

While I respect the military for what it does and the people who serve in it, I just don’t think I am cut out for it, and I think I have some personal ideological agreements that would keep me from joining. I dislike the blind authority aspect of it where you must obey everything said to you without question, and I just don’t want to spend my first few weeks being screamed at. I had enough of that at home.

I might join if I were drafted, but it would depend on why we are fighting. If it’s something like Vietnam, I’d probably try to dodge it, but I’d accept being drafted if we were fighting Nazis or someone attacked us first.

I would join the Navy if there was a big war or if I were drafted, even though I'm not that physically strong. I don't have a lot of upper body strength. So yeah, if there was a huge war, like WWIII or something, I would enlist in the Navy.

Literally the only thing I ever wanted to do in life was be a US Marine. Ever since I was twelve I dreamed of flying their Zulu Cobra/Viper gunship helicopters, then maybe not die and leave the marines, then get a job as a firefighting heli pilot in California, but I’ve had severe health problems lately and the recruiter said that the aforementioned health problems mean I’ll never get to join, unless there’s a bad enough situation where there’s a draft. If that happens I probably won’t be flying gunships.

So definitely yes, but life had other plans.

Word of warning medics see combat. Especially in this day and age of asymmetrical warfare. Oh and don’t worry about the not physically fit part, they will make you fit. All branches will the marines and army being more reliant on it than the others

I don't think I would join the military because I don't want to spend my entire life in the army. I don't like violence but maybe if there were nicer jobs I might consider. If I had to choose, I would fly supply planes so I don't get shot at and flying is cool. I know my friend's older brother wants to join the army. My father told me that he remembered the draft but he was too young so he escaped Vietnam.

Already in it for a number of years now. I think every self-respecting man should endeavour to pick up at least basic military skills, especially in this tumultous age that is only bound to get worse.

Where is the self-respect in knowing that I would kill somebody, who hasn't done anything wrong, but being born in another nation?

TBH, it's not something I ever thought about. Being coeliac, I'm barred from every branch of the armed forces.

Thinking about it now, if there's ever another large important war - similar to World War II - and all hands (even gluten-free ones) are needed at the pumps, I'd probably do something that provides some kind of auxiliary/voluntary support on the home front (then the lack of gluten-free rations on deployment won't be an issue).

This is exactly what my dad told me (he was an army medic). He also had to learn to use weapons and rappel out of aircraft.

Also, I couldn’t serve regardless if I wanted to or not. I have anxiety disorder and I would probably have a panic attack the second we were bombed or something.
