Would you serve in the military?

I remember seeing an army add on facebook and it seemed really cool how they portrayed the military. You could apply for all these different roles like flying a helicopter or being in a submarine. You didn't even have to do it as a full time job because they offered army reserves as well.

So would you join the military? Would you become an army reserve? What happens if there was a draft, would you accept or resist? What would you do in the army?

I don't think I would join the military because I don't want to spend my entire life in the army. I don't like violence but maybe if there were nicer jobs I might consider. If I had to choose, I would fly supply planes so I don't get shot at and flying is cool. I know my friend's older brother wants to join the army. My father told me that he remembered the draft but he was too young so he escaped Vietnam.

My health issues would prevent me from being accepted even if I had the mental fortitude to be a military person. So the answer for me is 'no'.

Literally the only thing I ever wanted to do in life was be a US Marine. Ever since I was twelve I dreamed of flying their Zulu Cobra/Viper gunship helicopters, then maybe not die and leave the marines, then get a job as a firefighting heli pilot in California, but I’ve had severe health problems lately and the recruiter said that the aforementioned health problems mean I’ll never get to join, unless there’s a bad enough situation where there’s a draft. If that happens I probably won’t be flying gunships.

So definitely yes, but life had other plans.

I would willingly do some systems-y or admin-y stuff (i.e. stuff I'm good at) to support a war effort, but I have a conscientious objection to being anywhere I'm remotely likely to get shot.

I'd accept being drafted,unless there were some odd circumstances. I signed up for selective service, I don't like it, but I'd probably have to honor it.

Only if there was a war that I really thought my help was needed.

I don't like violence. I don't like the us vs. them mentality in war, where someone is "the enemy" just because of their nationality. I don't like rigid hierarchies or structured environments. So I have a lot of issues with the military.

But if the right cause came along, there are things I'd be willing to fight for.

I plan on it. It’s my duty to serve the military. Unfortunately the USA doesn’t have any sort of conscription or mandatory service or anything making this recognized by everyone in the USA, but still. I’ll also serve in the National Guard.

I plan on it. I want to become a combat pilot in the Air Force, but I’d like an infantry position if that can’t work out. (I have terrible Asian vision, so that blocks me from being a pilot.)

Depends on the army and the war. I would refuse to serve in any draft that didn't include both sexes.
I'm not opposed to interventions either, so "Defense of homeland" wouldn't be required if we're intervening to stop a genocide or some such. I'd need a good reason.

I would join the reserve forces. I would join fulltime if there was conscription.

It doesn't make you a conscientious objector if you don't want to get shot. Thats called being scared of death, which is a perfectly natural fear, its hard wired into you, self preservation and all that shit.

At my current health? Nah, not a chance, wouldnt make it in.

If i was healthier, and in the right condition for it. Probably not, its not an interest i have.

If its a war against nazi germany 2.0 or zombie stalin etc, probably a lot more likely, but other than that not really.

I doubt the Irish defence force would do a lot anyway, and i most certainly would not be joining the british military.

I have few moral principles, but avoiding unnecessary short-term personal danger is one I won't shift on. Everyone else? Off you go lads, have a good one.

Already in it for a number of years now. I think every self-respecting man should endeavour to pick up at least basic military skills, especially in this tumultous age that is only bound to get worse.
