I don't blame anyone that lives in Henan Province for needing something to cheer them up, especially when someone they know just died. When I lived in China and I was visiting a different city every weekend to give my lungs a break from the pollution in Shijiazhuang -- Henan was by far the poorest, dumpiest, most depressing province I ever visited.

I've been told that Anhui is worse, but I don't know how that's possible.

Hebei... I can imagine them having strippers at funerals there. I have a soft spot for it cos I used to live there, but that place is screwy, and strippers at a funeral would not really stand out as being any weirder than the rest of it.

I'm surprised to see Jiangsu on the same list with the others, though.

I'm assuming there are also large quantities of baijiu at these funerals...

I've tried baijiu, but not specifically at a funeral. I didn't go to any funerals while I was in China.

I've actually tried really high-end baijiu because I got invited to a dinner with some local officials... It's strongly alcoholic, so you can really taste the alcohol and feel the kick from it.

the standard accepted criteria is more than 3 generations (if your grandparents did it with their parents and have passed it on to you then its a tradition)

If I understand the article correctly, I actually believe what the professor quoted was saying is that “fertility rituals” are common at Chinese funerals, growing out of the rural religions that unofficially exist in China. In some ways such rituals make sense, many believe death to be linked to birth/rebirth so celebrating fertility is in someways appropriate. Anyhow, I think the professors point was that as cultural fusion occurs the older traditional rites of fertility are being replaced with Western-style strip tease. Which, from an ironically more Westernized viewpoint, seems like the height of bad taste.

In reality, the government probably is more concerned about appearances to the outside world of such customs than how traditional or non traditional they are, since rural China in general is something of an embarrassment to them even without strip-funerals.

Or to paraphrase Bender: “Yeah, well I’m going to off myself, and have my own funeral! With blackjack! And hookers! In fact, forget offing myself...”
