When did spanking a child become legal again ?

So... Circumcision is a punishment for misbehavior, then? Because spanking your child just because they're there to spank (as opposed to doing so as corrective action for misbehavior) is pretty much universally considered abuse.

Spanking is banned in the UK, which makes the circumcision thing even more incoherent. The "Reasonability" exception for spanking has, in practice, been reduced to "never" by evolving standards. Presumably that exemption might come into effect during outlier cases where physically restraining or attacking your child prevents greater harm due to them trying to win a darwin award.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

I already told you that.

Why is it assault in one case and NOT assault on someone who is helpless to prevent you, and cannot consent?

Yes, we do.

We just don't want circumcision performed on people who can't consent to it.

Mmm, I dunno. Give a kid a spanking and you're likely to receive a visit from child services.

I mean, if you smack them on the butt once to get them to stop doing something, after having been told multiple times not to do something, that’s not child abuse. If you take out the belt and just start hitting them until they turn purple, that’s definitely something to show to CPS.

I don’t like spanking myself, nor do I advocate it, but if the parent just whaps a kid on the butt once, for misbehavior, that’s not quite child abuse.

The thing is, you can live without either. My point is that mutilating for no medical necessity is illogical. An argument for circumcision is that it prevents infection; how would it not be the same to remove an eye for the possibility of infection as well?

People who support circumcision, please rebut this. ^

Why do you have to bump your post? Do you really think your argument is that different from what anyone else has been saying?

If you come up with an excuse not to argue points made, you obviously lack interest in supporting your claim.

It is in Iceland (as well as about 40 other countries). Which is the country the ban on circumcision is now law..

I think Sweden, too. And since Iceland and Sweden ban it, it's probably also illegal in Germany, Norway, Denmark, and maybe Finland. Though that's just extrapolation.

That makes sense. The US tends to be slightly behind other Western countries in a lot of aspects, though definitely not military strength and percentage of population who support right-wing populism.

This is a good first step to outlawing religion - outlaw the more outlandish components first, then continually move towards total eradication. I'm also quite glad that Iceland, a country known for being excellent in most every measure, is doing this. It seems like a good symbol for the international community.

No thanks. I'm not a fan of organized religion by any stretch, but outlawing it is stupid and unnecessary.
