My brother was talking about the influx of people to Sacramento from the Bay Area is skyrocketing housing prices there. And they're building new fancy condos there, too, while also seemingly acting like they're making the city "better". They're apparently making places historical sites left and right in the city (including my moms old house, interestingly enough) because they're just replacing the old styled homes everywhere down there with fancy new condos.

Looks like San Fran needs some Atlanta style city planning. Bulldozed everything old and empty and put up flashy new apartments

Then explain to me why people are moving away like crazy? Also California has a water crisis. What do they do? Build desalination plants and attempt to curb wasteful water consumption? Nope. They build an billion dollar train to nowhere that started construction in 2015 and won’t be finished with phase one until 2030.

Desalination is extremely expensive and isn’t worth it unless your Saudi Arabia.

Rent controls discourage people from building housing. A housing shortage would be made worse by rent controls. "There problem solved" if you ignore simple economics.

Desalination can become affordable as the technology improves. But if a state is wealthy and has a water supply problem, then they might as well spare no expense in finding ways to get sources of water. It is one of the longest term security investments that could possibly be made.

Tell that to the OK state.

California and Oklahoma are good examples of the extremes that should be avoided.

Ever since the election California has been getting hate on.

Kinda unfair really.

Anyway, housing market is too expensive and San Fran is losing people.

With all the selling, prices will fall and people will move back.

Hating California is a past time with some people. Some just don’t like sunshine and beaches or something and some are so ideologically bent that if they accept a functional California it destroys their world view. So there’s some cat right now hitting “quote” so he can do those error arrows on “functional California”. It’s cool we’ll just be over here being awesome and the rest will catch up to us eventually.

Guarantee some of you having a problem with the "cool to hate California" stereotype everywhere else.

I could say the same about Louisiana and you could call us a bunch of backwards, mudbug-eating, alligator-riding hicks. Still doesn't add to the conversation. But sure, make your daily smug comment because it makes you feel good or whatever. You have your state, others have theirs, and nobody is obligated to like your state either.

He didn't say "they hate us cause they ain't us." He said they hate the evidence that clashes with their worldview.

Louisiana, to the extent they are doing well, it's from oil revenue that harms everybody else through climate change. And even then, they come begging for federal assistance they wouldn't need if they didn't live in such a flood-prone state to begin with.

He basically said, "They hate us cause they ain't us." Look at the last sentence in the quote.

...This is an entirely different conversation concerning oil, but we also have a pretty good tourism industry and a fishing industry. We're not wealthy by any stretch, but our main problem is education. Which is where we keep having money-troubles. Furthermore, it's rather insensitive to say, "Oh it's your fault for living in a flood-prone state, stinks to be you if you lose your house." But whatever, carry on.

Heh.

But srsly, I wouldn't mind visiting Cali.

It has some good theme parks and it sounds like it has lovely weather.

What I think is funny is everyone thinks California is the same. I lived a large chunk of my life there where it regularly had 6 feet of snow on the ground at once.

San Francisco wants very much to preserve its architecture and therefore implements strict regulation on new buildings. The fact that people are moving out is almost by design.

They didn't vote for Trump so therefore they are bad people to some. They could do the solution I gave in San Francisco which is Rent control or rent stabilization for everyone and stop building luxary housing for rich people. and the housing problem would be solved easily. Politicians always have to make things so complicated

Just like how people who voted for Trump are a bi ch of racist Nazis who deserve to have their home fall apart./s Assholes are on both sides.

And how would rent control help?

Not just better rent control but there also needs to be more affordable housing and less luxury apartments. Also Oakland isn't really a viable option for many people either, rent is skyrocketing in the east bay too.

Rent was affordable once. The republican market collapse and their foreclosure celebrations drove rents crazy. I had a crappy flat that was 1200 and at the height of foreclosure times it was 2700.

We bought a house in South Lake Tahoe in like 2003 for $290,000 and when we moved out 2 years later it was $500,000 (Until everything crashed)

Certain people with certain ideologies believe that certain left wing ideas that California supports are shit and will only destroy the country, but get pissed off when you show them the fact that Ca is the richest, most populous, and one of the nicest (Weather-wise) places to live.

Damn, $1200 monthly for a crappy flat is insane. I can't imagine $2700. Holy shit.

Just how crappy are we talking here? Good neighborhood? Solid building with no major structural problems?

The cheapest I can get here in Washington is $1,500 a month for a 3 bedroom that is like 1,000 square feet. These apartments aren't exactly thrilling or anything.
