Not a bad take.

We are experiencing an understandable loss of trust in established sources of information while being constantly surrounded by a cacophony of stuff that, due to its sheer volume and rhythm, we can't really handle in a genuinely thoughtful and critical way.

Not entirely wrong. After all, we live in the post-truth era, where even we cannot trust the most trusted media and where the fake news could very well be ended up as true.

It boggles the mind how one can be so ignorant and uniformed to believe the Earth is flat. It was known even during the time of Ancient Greece Ptolemy, Aristotle and Pythagoras used calculations of the earth's shadow during lunar eclipses to conclude the Earth was round. Another Greek mathematician Eratosthenes realized the earth was round because during the solstice in Alexandria, Eqypt there was a shadow cast by a stick in the ground but in the city of Syene (now Aswan) which was further south as there was no shadow as the sun was at a different angle. Therefore he concluded the Earth was round. This would not be the case if the Earth was flat.

But some of these people go even further they not only believe the Earth is flat, they don't think satellites or the International Space Station exists, the Apollo landings never happened, the Earth is the center of the universe, and gravity isn't real.

The fact that this movement is growing and people have such ignorance of science and facts is frightening. I would suggest these people visit a museum but they'd probably say its all fake anyway designed to continue deceiving people.

What's your thoughts NSG? Why has this movement been growing and how could someone honestly believe the Earth is flat when its been known for over 2,000 years that its not?

I am astounded by people's capacity for willful ignorance and stupidity.

Pretty much.

I usually dismiss theories like this that spit in the face of easily verifiable physics, myself. But, I think other conspiracy theories should be taken more seriously.

Yes, my gnome domination theory has credibility now!

Worst part is that you can never win an argument with them. Whether ot be flat earth or evolution. This and YouTube comments on otherwise intelligent videos erode my faith in humanity.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried from time to time." -
Winston Churchill, 1947.

Sadly it seems being intellectual and and intelligent is becoming taboo to people. You could show them photos from space taken in 1947 that prove the Earth is round and they'd say they were fake. I don't know how you'd keep a conspiracy like the Earth being flat quiet. Just like how someone would have leaked the Apollo missions being fake by now considering over 400,000 people worked on the missions.

ChickenBookland wrote:How can anyone actually think that the Earth is flat? Either they’re lying, they’re hypnotized, or they need help. There are so many ways to prove that they Earth is round, from the experiment Erastonsense or whatever his name is did to the pictures of Earth. And why do Flat Earth people say that NASA is lying to us? There are plenty of other space agencies that have taken pictures from space and sent astronauts into orbit, but no Flat Earthers are claiming that they are lying.

Experiments were done in the past when people were more ignorant. You can't expect some Greek not-scientist to prove anything. They thought there were only four elements: earth, wind, fire, water. So if they can't even figure that out, what makes you think they can figure the shape of the earth out? If the Earth is in fact round, and spinning at hundreds of miles a minute, the mere action of jumping up would cause me to fly in a direction very very fast... but I don't.

As for pictures, there are many great historical examples of pictures being doctored from Stalin's disappearing followers to Great White attacking a helicopter. A round earth picture is nothing more than clever use of an ages old technique. Anyone with a camera and a computer can turn anything into anything. Lenses work on refracting light due to curvatures of the glass/whatever, and I'm sure you've noticed that the windows on airplanes aren't perfectly flat. They will give a small curve to the horizon, I noticed it in the sky, and on the ground. Bit hard to notice the distortion since there's more going on, but once you're in the sky, and all you have is the ground and sky to compare... it becomes easier to notice.

The live stream of the Falcon Heavy is just as easy to explain as total rubbish. We have video games that look absolutely perfect, and in the case of SpaceX, they have spent millions if not billions on this sham... after all why would the US military sink the main stage? Because it still had the Roadster in there. They sunk it to keep the illusion, and the idiots satisfied with a roadster in space. Musk is in bed with NASA... after all the US government is paying his company to "launch" things into orbit. Don't believe technology is good enough? Consider that face swap software that was revealed recently that could essentially do live face swapping with enough practice and run up. Why not apply that to "space launches?"

These aren't too hard to actually figure out if you actually THINK for a few minutes. Take note that Blue Origin and ULA are both working with the US government to provide them with rocket launches, and keep them in check. SpaceX is already in the government's pocket with their contracts and funding. Space Ship One was a nominally private, and look what happened to Space Ship One... yeah, that wasn't subtle. Pretty much all private space ventures have some funding from their respective governments. This isn't rocket science. The governments are all in it together. All of the current "space capable" nations are UN members... I think you can connect the dots.

Okay, I had almost too much fun writing that. That was all a joke, but it was easier to write bullshit than prove reality. This logic is easy because you need a minimal amount of knowledge to apply it, and it's so flawed it's fairly hard to refute without some other stupid logical loophole being opened. I can deny anything here by asking another stupid question while prefacing it with "I'm not expert, buuuuuuut," or just accuse you of being too stupid to understand. I could go on to say, "for thousands of years people thought disease was a spiritual thing until germ theory," and say everyone believed it or some rubbish.

tl;dr: Deny everything, discredit reality, create your own reality with minimal facts.

It works for a lot of conspiracy theories. China discovering America, Holocaust Denial, vaccines is a great one.
Eternally salty, quite tired, and perhaps looking for a brighter future.

The massive uptick in Google search results aren't necessarily proof of more people buying into that shit, but that is what they suggest.
