Modern flat Earthers to back to the mid 20th century. The increasing social media following is probably ironic, but you give some of them too much credit.

Not surprising, given that 42 percent of Americans are ready and willing to reject science and literal facts when they fly in the face of their fancy book of choice. This is of course slightly more egregious, but we've proven that evolution exists already (see Richard Lenski, or look at the fossil record) just as we've proven that the Earth is an oblate spheroid through images, and yet people still think both are made up or "just theories."

I still refuse to believe it. I mean, ok, let's say it is flat. What if... someone falls off? No matter how hard the government covers it, there will always be that stupid one with a sailboat who travelled a tad too far and promptly fell off.

They will probably tell you Antartica is a wall of ice that keeps you from falling off and that people have been duped into believing the ice wall doesn't exist.

Cekovians can confirm that they very much live inside a wall of ice.

I think most YECs in the general population didn't get a decent biology education and are indoctrinated with the Genesis myth, and that's why they don't believe in evolution, but that could be the case too.

As much as I agree with this post, I see this surge of anti-intellectualism as a side effect of how fake and artificial our world has become. It is rather hard to put one's trust in things when it is so easy to conjure up fabricated articles and research.

I suppose we could do an in-depth examination of what would drive a growing number of people into the arms of such a kooky worldview... but I'm tired and too baffled. :P

As I've said, rebelling against something that most accept that has little risk to deny can always feel good to people desperate for pleasure, especially since this denial is pretty easy to do. All ye do is go online, type "Earth is flat" & there. Now you feel like a proud, independent person who's smarter than everyone else & think, "who cares if everyone else is right? I'm feelin' good."

There's also an equally high chance that what I'm saying right now is pretty much false but we'll arrive at some conclusion, I'm sure.

Not a bad take.

We are experiencing an understandable loss of trust in established sources of information while being constantly surrounded by a cacophony of stuff that, due to its sheer volume and rhythm, we can't really handle in a genuinely thoughtful and critical way.

Yeah. The Earth is a round old lady with giant mountains who is getting increasingly common hot flashes and chills, increasingly moody, and has to listen to some of her children demanding she be given less strain and most of them squabbling over her fortune before she's even on her deathbed and wondering when her children will give her grandkids.
Jebslund is a nation of kerbals ruled by Emperor Jebediah Kerman. We reject tyranny, believing that rights should be protected, though we also believe said rights end where the rights of others begin.
Shockingly, we *do* use NS stats, with the exception of lifespan.
Singular sapient: Jebslunder
Plural Sapient: Jebslunden
Singular/Plural nonsapient: Kermanic
Note: When a verb can logically only be done by the sapient using/piloting/holding the object in question, then the appropriate demonym for the number of sapients is used.

Capitalism, Socialism, and Communism are ECONOMIC SYSTEMS. Stop conflating them with political systems.

I'd imagine that if you called them out on it they'd explain it as an "already well-established metaphor that's even more metaphorical & is a reference to a bygone era of thinking" or say that "the idiom is just another example of how they want to control people. First they're indoctrinating ideas, & now they're controlling your language through figurative language involving the existence of a round Earth." Or call you an idiot. One of the three.

How can anyone actually think that the Earth is flat? Either they’re lying, they’re hypnotized, or they need help. There are so many ways to prove that they Earth is round, from the experiment Erastonsense or whatever his name is did to the pictures of Earth. And why do Flat Earth people say that NASA is lying to us? There are plenty of other space agencies that have taken pictures from space and sent astronauts into orbit, but no Flat Earthers are claiming that they are lying.

To comprehend those experiments would take effort that they aren't willing to expend, & they claim specifically NASA probably because they're the most well-known agency, so they might think that denouncing them gives their cause more influence since everyone knows NASA & not any of those other agencies.

The Flat Earth Movement is dangerously closing in to more than just a movement, becoming more like a cult. A pseudo-scientific cult.

I though they have the plan to send rockets filled with their people to determine the flatness of the Earth.
