1984 was right about a dystopian future, just off in how it would look like.

Edit: Brave New World is probably more fitting, as we now have too much information that people make up stupid things, instead of too little.

I've thought the same, Brave New World is what were headed to, with a dash of 1984 (especially New Speak).

Unreason and anti-intellectualism abominate thought. Thinking implies disagreement; and disagreement implies nonconformity; and nonconformity implies heresy; and heresy implies disloyalty — so, obviously, thinking must be stopped. But shouting is not a substitute for thinking and reason is not the subversion but the salvation of freedom.

"You're not on a tiny little speck of rock just flying through this endless, incomprehensible universe and you are not small," said Sargent, who believes Earth is beneath a dome. "It was built just for you. All the world is a stage and you're in it. You are on a ride. Part stage, part terrarium, part planetarium. Whatever it is, it is very deliberate."

This part is particularly sad to me. By the looks of it, the flat earth movement is a pseudo-religious reaction against our current understanding of the cosmos. I think it has less to do with actually believing the earth is a disk, and more to do with interpreting the conventional scientific view of the universe as too depressing, making humanity seem small and insignificant. These people don't want the truth, they want meaning and comfort, and you can't really blame them for that.

I think what they need aren't explanations as to why their "evidence" and reasoning are incorrect. They need to be shown that being "small" compared to the rest of the vast and complicated universe we live in doesn't have to be a scary or disheartening thing. It means that there will always be something new for us to learn and explore, and just by existing you're already a part of something immense and wonderful. I believe there's a certain beauty in that these people don't recognize.

Good point, honestly what keeps me from feeling like the Earth is just a small insignificant speck in the universe is the hope that there's life somewhere on some different planet, and that things we once thought impossible could be possible and even exist. I mean, there's millions of other systems out there, so the chances of us being completely alone in the universe are extremely extremely slim.

It boggles the mind how one can be so ignorant and uniformed to believe the Earth is flat. It was known even during the time of Ancient Greece Ptolemy, Aristotle and Pythagoras used calculations of the earth's shadow during lunar eclipses to conclude the Earth was round. Another Greek mathematician Eratosthenes realized the earth was round because during the solstice in Alexandria, Eqypt there was a shadow cast by a stick in the ground but in the city of Syene (now Aswan) which was further south as there was no shadow as the sun was at a different angle. Therefore he concluded the Earth was round. This would not be the case if the Earth was flat.

But some of these people go even further they not only believe the Earth is flat, they don't think satellites or the International Space Station exists, the Apollo landings never happened, the Earth is the center of the universe, and gravity isn't real.

The fact that this movement is growing and people have such ignorance of science and facts is frightening. I would suggest these people visit a museum but they'd probably say its all fake anyway designed to continue deceiving people.

What's your thoughts NSG? Why has this movement been growing and how could someone honestly believe the Earth is flat when its been known for over 2,000 years that its not?

In the right conditions you can develop and perpetuate the dumbest fucking ideas. If you can fake yourself to look legit for your average doof on the net or just have the amazing gift of charisma and good looks, you're good to go even on TV. Also if the idea has at least some history behind it, it's more legit for some reason. You can have a cult of your own today!

Seriously. If you repeat something long enough, you'll start to believe in it. When you'll start believing it, so do other people who are in good standing with you. They just can't let go of their own safe spaces, the snowflakes that they are, the snowflakes that we all are. Everyone loves a good reciprocal backscratch-backstab. It's like a love tap from a sociopath!

Take my timeless advice to heart and believe me, you will hear your loved ones cry "I can't believe it's not bullshit" in no time! Be the kingpin of bullshit you were meant to be and control the world with your nutjob ideas! Ambition, my friends, is what the youth of today need.

Or both.

What evidence do you have that the amount flat earthers have increased, maybe it's because recently people have been given them more exposure then ever before, making people think there is an ever increasing amount of flat earthers; maybe everyone should stop giving flat earthers attention and the problem will disappear.

See, this is what happens when you don't fund education. This is what happens when your high schools are this subpar. People legitimately start taking 2000 year old books literally and believe in it (and start lobbying to make sure their belief becomes the state-sponsored truth, of course). That's how you get Anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers and creationists.

People who think they are edgy that want to believe there is a flat earth. Lol. That's all it is. It's all about this being 'too special for actual thought' mentality that's being adopted by a fringe of our population today.

Agreed. Though I think the Flat Earth "movement" isn't as big as we think it is. Certainly there are likely quite a few who do buy into it, but I think it's mostly trolls.

I mean, I can see why the government wouldn't fund education (after all, an aware population doesn't end up legitimately thinking 'Democracy? that sounds like Commyanism!' is an idea you should listen to, to name one reason) but this level of anti-intellectualism is just too much.
