It is human nature to want more. Greed is embedded into all of our personalities. We will always strive to be better in all respects including power. I believe humanity is reaching a point where we're not senselessly fighting over land solely for greed as we become more and more conscious of the moral repercussions, but there will always be a force that will seek out territory and power solely out of greed. This desire for more- for excess cannot be stopped. It is human nature. But we can learn to control it.

The cause of fighting over territory is the fact that territory is regarded as property that can be owned. The only way that human beings will stop fighting over territory is if human beings stop seeing territory as property. But that will likely never happen. Ever since our very early ancestors have had the ability to demarcate a certain area from the rest of the environment, such as a cave, there is always someone else who wants it; in this case because of the practical value that it holds, i.e. shelter from the elements. In modern times we have an entire system of laws, both domestic and international, aimed at preventing such behaviour, but it often doesn't.

To actually stop that kind of behaviour would require nothing less than completely changing the human brain. But that'd likely create an offshoot organism that couldn't be defined as "human" anymore, so it is a bit of a cop-out in terms of a solution.

The desire for territory is rooted in the survival mechanism of needing a sustainable place to live, not exactly something you can just teach away. The only real way to come close to eliminating this would be to get rid of the concept of territory altogether and making the world a kind of one-government-no-borders deal, but even that won't entirely solve the problem. You'd still get disputes over who has the right to use what areas of land for what purposes, etc.

We form groups and fight for territory. Apparently some other species do it sometimes. For us "territory" is held by force, because history shows us groups of humans can and will force others off of territory, and the strongest force is controlled by politics and governments. So we fight, one way or another, over politics and government, and then generally some impoverished people are killed or maimed, soldiers are killed or maimed, and the territory moves toward equilibrium. Some times it takes many years, or even generations for the territory to reach even temporary stability. The stability has never shown to be perpetual.

With the exception of some youtubers broadcasting from their bunker in the back of the laundry room of an apartment building their grandparents own, most Americans rightfully do not fear violation of their territory, as foreign occupation of the mainland US is extremely unlikely. The price of that: Nuclear weapons. Our fight for territory has risen such that if all of its most powerful weapons were used, it could end civilization. Even the wars of the Gods did not destroy the entire world. Ours could.

Our natural human behavior of fighting for territory now endangers the very value of territory itself, that you can live on it and from its resources. The fight is not just nuclear. Its biological, chemical, cybernetic. Information itself weaponized in a way that can destroy infrastructure in ways no bomb can.

It is also natural that a species behavior, if not adaptable quickly enough, can result in its own extinction. It is also natural that some species can change, adapt. Human can adapt mass behavior very quickly and effectively through culture and technology, which drive and amplify one another.

Do you think the tendency of we moon-walking primates to fight over territory could be overcome, changed, adapted? And how?

I think yes, but it will involve nano-threaded brain implants connecting us to a human species-wide neural network, and the other changes in us that will occur cotemporaneously will be so abstract and fundamental that the meaning of the behavior will be relegated to history, read only once by those who come after us.

While we can certainly slow this down (taking over the world and forcing everyone to be a part of the same state would stop it for a while, but then a revolution would happen), we can never stop this. Humans are only happy relative to other humans (even the lowliest worker in a modern developed nation like America, Germany or Japan enjoys a level of security, comfort, and freedom unmatched by anyone short of a knight in feudal times, but we still manage to be unhappy anyway), and if someone thinks that ruling a greater area will bring them greater happiness, than they will take steps to ensure that that happens, regardless of who they are.
The people focused on religion might do it to spread their faith, the people focused on politics might do it to spread their ideology, the people focused on being benevolent to their own people might do it to spread their benevolence, the dictators might do it for the lulz, and any of them might do it for gold and glory, but everyone, on some level, wants to be a conqueror, and if you take someone with that desire and give them an army, war is inevitable.

If fighting over territory weren't profitable, it wouldn't happen nearly as much. Of course there will still be conflicts between people, but the large-scale, expensive, bloody conflicts we're used to would just be impractical if there isn't a benefit for the people in charge. "War is the continuation of politics by other means," after all.

Well, today there isn't really any point in any developed country conquering territory as the developed world's economy is mostly based on information and organisational know-how. For example, China wouldn't gain anything worth mentioning from invading California and conquering Silicon Valley as the tech corporations would just GTFO, while Rwanda made millions of dollars from invading the DRC and mining Congolese coltan (a resource used in mobile phones), which stayed put. In fact, a major reason there are so many wars in Africa and the Middle East is because most of their economy is based on natural resources.
