The reason that the caste system has survived so long is that it’s a top down power structure that you can never leave. Even medieval Europe you ‘could’ rise.

I fail to see why you love the caste system so much when you yourself say it's kinda unfortunate (Understatement of the year) that entire families are doomed for all their liniage to one specific menial task that sets them below literally everyone else. God forbid you get rolled as a rat-catcher family, because then even the janitors and sewer-workers will be looking down upon you. Your children regardless of merit can never leave the squalor you brought them into, and the only way your family can ever escape such misery is if you SOMEHOW scrape together the meager resources to move to another country and somehow learn its language along the way.
Additionally I find it rather interesting that you know so little of the caste system that you literally asked 'Do you think anyone in your family would be moving up or down soon?' seeing as there is NO mobility in the caste system. If you are a good little peasant you might get reincarnated as something cool, that's your only option in the caste system- die and hope the Hindu faith is right.

To stay on the specific point of the thread (Which in and of itself shows lack of understanding of the hereditary nature of the system), I would likely be Brahmin if I was the first link in my family's caste as I am studying to become a professor, though if you simply looked at my family history I would likely be among the Kshatriyas.

Some video to add some context to this discussion. It is sad, this Dalit got enough education to become a computer scientist, but he says that no one is willing to hire him for work in that field where he lives, so he is instead forced to labor for 10 or so hours every day to make just a few dollars doing the dirtiest and most undesirable jobs in India, which includes the picking up of dead animals.

And Dalits are unfortunately, at more risk for rape or murder than the other castes are. It is apparently forbidden to marry outside your caste.

Yes like we said the Caste system is dumb. You can not move from your place in life. If you are born a Dalit you stay a Dalit, same with every single caste. You are born a Kshatriya you stay a Kshatriya even if you don’t want to be in the military or government

Yet not a peep from Westerners about Hinduism being a barbaric primitive religion.

Does acknowledging that a system has social mobility somehow mean one is saying it's not awful?

Where does it say that? What would be the rationale for this? I'd think that there just aren't that many White people in India, so would a White person who is otherwise very unskilled and poorly educated really still qualify as a Brahmin under the Caste system? From what I could gather, it primarily uses social class or occupation to determine who belongs to which caste.

It would seem that there is a clear benefit in that it has clearly defined social hierarchy and roles, but a great disadvantage is that people in the lower castes have no incentive to improve their lot in life.

A society that is more egalitarian, can probably become economically wealthier than a nation that still rigidly adheres to a caste system via bringing the majority of its population up to a higher level of education, which indirectly causes there to be more economic growth and opportunities than would otherwise exist.

When our chaps, whites, went to India, they enforced that all white people are considered to be superior than the natives, as a means to control them. We did it at school. And the caste system uses ancestry to determine who belongs where. You lie, it's considered a crime, as is people from the first 3 classes marry a Dalit.

The caste system was originally introduced to keep the upper caste of the aryan conquerors and their descendants forever and for all eternity in power. It's exactly there to create a racialist hierarchy, rather than one based on profession.

Yes it is actually racist.

I've found generally that the countries which are the freest, most democratic, have the best all-around standard of living, and are the most advanced by industrial standards are also the ones with the highest amount of social mobility.

So now I've started judging countries by their social mobility, not their titles or structures of government.

A caste system - whether in the form of the Mauritanian and South African racial systems or the class-based structure in India - eliminates the possibility of social mobility.

Agreed, but the whole point of a caste system is to restrict social mobility.

There are and will always remain exceptions in every system. But exceptions do not a rule make.
