I would venture to guess that the highest caste a person qualifies for, is their actual caste. But remember that it is primarily determined by what kind of family you're born into. No one is able to move castes under the caste system. A lower class person will remain low status from birth until the day they die.

Having been both a priest and a teacher, I suppose I could be a Brahmin. But the ones I have known, although they could be charming at times, were also rather aloof and rigid.

I prefer the lawyers and businessmen I have known, whatever their various castes may be (Vaishya, I guess). They were more fun-loving.

It shouldn't be possible because castes in India are based on birth. So unless you are indian you shouldn't be part of any caste.

This should be more of an hypothetical, if one was an indian while keeping their current work and education, which caste would they fit in.
It's done in reverse from status to caste, since it isn't possible to go normally from caste to status, since well, most of us aren't from and living in India.

It's actually a mess to rank this retroactively. My grandparents were Vaishyas and Shudras, my parents are Brahmins, and I'm Shudras now.
So what should be my family? Vaishyas with varying degrees?

Both of my parents are successful in the medical fields, and I'm about to embark on my own academic journey soon, so I guess we're brahmins. Although I did serve in the military, so I dunno.

For Brahmins in this thread, does it feel good to be at the top in terms of Caste or does it ring hollow if under those circumstances, you'd be allowed to oppress people who're lower in Caste than you are?

I know a lot of people (relatively speaking) now get 2 or 4 year degrees in college, so I reckon that true academics can be considered those who get a Masters or Doctorate degree- not as many people have the means or dedication to get that much higher education as opposed to just a 4 or 2 year degree which has become much more common (and thus less valuable) in today's era.

I am surprised that Brahmins are over represented in the poll, they're supposed to be the elite of the elite. But it might well be realistic for this website to have attracted a number of people who've gone to University for an awfully long time or are a teacher.

Where does it say that? What would be the rationale for this? I'd think that there just aren't that many White people in India, so would a White person who is otherwise very unskilled and poorly educated really still qualify as a Brahmin under the Caste system? From what I could gather, it primarily uses social class or occupation to determine who belongs to which caste.

It would seem that there is a clear benefit in that it has clearly defined social hierarchy and roles, but a great disadvantage is that people in the lower castes have no incentive to improve their lot in life.

A society that is more egalitarian, can probably become economically wealthier than a nation that still rigidly adheres to a caste system via bringing the majority of its population up to a higher level of education, which indirectly causes there to be more economic growth and opportunities than would otherwise exist.

When our chaps, whites, went to India, they enforced that all white people are considered to be superior than the natives, as a means to control them. We did it at school. And the caste system uses ancestry to determine who belongs where. You lie, it's considered a crime, as is people from the first 3 classes marry a Dalit.

It's like advocating for feudalism. Anyone who openly does it assumes they will be in the ruling or upper class or caste. Nobody demands the return of feudalism with hopes of being a lowly serf abused by everyone else. Whoever wants a caste system in the West obviously assumes they won't be dhalit.

This.

The reason that the caste system has survived so long is that it’s a top down power structure that you can never leave. Even medieval Europe you ‘could’ rise.

At least in feudalism you could bump yourself up a few notches. That isn't possible in the case system.
