For those who’s rent aware, the upcoming game (which I’m personally pumped for) will be coming out in March, and be taking place in rural Montana. The games story specifically has you, a police officer, killing an army of Christian Cultists, who according to all the images I’ve seen, are white people you may call “Rednecks”. This has drawn a lot of ire as it being inflammatory in our current political situation. There was even a Change.com petition to have the setting changed to instead have the antagonists be Muslims or to have it take place in Canada, though many think this was trolls. Point is, it is a rather touchy subject right now.
This goes beyond racial tension and and a rising political rift. As I said, the main character is a cop, and my years of playing far cry tells me this officer of the law will kill a lot of people.
All of this being said though, is this bad? Is this going to worsen a problem in the country, or serve as a look at the situation to allow players to view it in a separate environment. Personally, I’m of the mindset it’s fine, especially as many of the members of the resistance who fights the cult are also Christians who are using their right to bear arms to protect their liberties. So, what say you NSG? To edgy to be a good game, an artist look at modern issues, or a video game where the story doesn’t matter?
If I'm ever getting that game and making my character do anything, it's going to the border of the map to run off and get federal authorities.
Which might not be possible as the federal authorities are either unable to do anything about a civil war in Montana or have much bigger fish to fry in the states, and abroad.
