Elon Musk sends his car into space

Postby Minoa » Tue Feb 06, 2018 3:00 pm

Sources: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-42969020 and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elon_Musk ... a_Roadster

What are your observations on Elon Musk’s work-in-progress mission to his old cherry-red Tesla sports car into space, with the radio now playing David Bowie's Space Oddity on a loop,* along with many The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references?

In my opinion, I think it more of reminds me of the cover to Slugbug’s Stupid Rock, which was released more than two years ago. And here is a the real kicker: more powerful rockets are needed to send larger spacecraft into deep space.

* Although in space it is unlikely anyone would hear the song play.

Of he wants his car in space he wants his car in space.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

”Many forms of government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe.
No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is
the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried from time to time." -
Winston Churchill, 1947.

"Rifles, muskets, long-bows and hand-grenades are inherently democratic weapons. A complex weapon makes the strong stronger, while a simple weapon – so long as there is no answer to it – gives claws to the weak.” - George Orwell

Elon Musk is certainly entertaining. Possibly slightly mad, but at least it's nice to hear about someone doing something cool with their money.

I concur with your assessment. Word is he edited the fails video himself. :P And launching the car is silly... but it's the kind of silly I can get behind. Not to mention the stream from up there is oddly mesmerizing. :lol2:

Saw the launch and thought it was cool, then i found out it was for his car and laughed a bit because thats kind of what i would expect him to do.

It's really odd since David Bowie was musics second lowest point in recorded history. Only, narrowly, behind plastic Bertrand. Does he want a war with aliens because that's how you get one.

Awesome that the vehicle didn't shake itself apart and that they recovered all 3 cores (I think, not 100% sure about the center core). The ability to selectively recover cores provides a lot of flexibility.

Next, SLS and New Glenn!

This is probably the best thing to happen in the past 5 years, to be honest. SpaceX just made history like 5x over with today's launch.

It's not finished yet. Have to see whether the 3rd stage works and we send that bitch into a Mars intercept orbit.

Top Gear actually tried doing this with a Reliant Robin back in 2007, and it crashed as badly as Windows Me, in seconds.

It's amazing, I could watch that all day - I do think it's kind of awesome to put a shiny red Tesla in space with a soundtrack and spaceman suit..

Then what is the high point?
Capitalism, single-payer healthcare, pro-choice, LGBT rights, progressive personal taxation, low corporate tax, pro-business law, welfare for those in need.
Nazism, edgism, dogmatic statements, most of Abrahamic-derived morality (esp. as law), welfare for those not in need.

Male, gearhead, classic rock fan, gamer, agnostic.

So he can send a Roadster into space but can't send a paying customer their Model 3. Or actually make Tesla profitable. Good to see Musk has his priorities straight.

It's not as cool as you'd think.

But it does stick with you.
