I consider Franklin D. Roosevelt to be the best president, followed by Lincoln, Wilson, LBJ, and Truman. Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, and Grant are also up there.

lol every economist today will say he actually extended the great depression by about 12 years. His anti-business socialist programs only impeded growth. He literally had people researching the history of the safety pin and chasing tumbleweeds through the street "to provide them with a job". Of course, these programs produced nothing of value, they were just siphoning off of tax dollars and were a net drain. By 1933, when the US was at the worst point, the UK was already out of it because they didnt do all this New Deal nonsense. FDR's own advisers are on record saying that they largely just expanded existing Hoover programs. Hoover and FDR were the same. Neither was capitalist. Both contributed to the depression. Terrible guy. Also a racist.

Coolidge closed off America to Jews fleeing persecution in Europe. FDR continued that shameful tradition of complying with the bigotry of the public. He deserves to be condemned for that (although his legacy on this issue may be more complicated than commonly thought), but it is overshadowed by all the other great things he did for the United States, Jewish Americans included. Wilson’s segregationist views also deserve to be condemned, but they ought to have bearing on my evaluation of him as a person, not his performance as president.

Sure, but Coolidge didn't do so when Adolf Hitler was in power and commanding that all Jews be immediately imprisoned if they did not leave the country. It's a worse thing depending on the context, much like how James K. Polk owning slaves wouldn't be as big of a deal as George W. Bush owning slaves.
Collatis wrote:He deserves to be condemned for that (although his legacy on this issue may be more complicated than commonly thought), but it is overshadowed by all the other great things he did for the United States, Jewish Americans included.

Ah yes, all the fantastic things he did for America, such as:
  • Arresting American citizens for being the wrong race
  • Harassing his political opponents using the IRS
  • Flooding the Supreme Court with more justices that would support him than anyone else other than the founder of the country had ever done or has ever done since
  • Trying to ban poor people from their constitutional right of owning a firearm
  • Allowing the Nazis to conquer all of the mainland European allies while refusing to get involved
  • Trying to economically starve the Japanese instead of trying to sway them to our side or just stopping them ourselves, causing them to take over most of the pacific and then attack us
Collatis wrote:Wilson’s segregationist views also deserve to be condemned, but they ought to have bearing on my evaluation of him as a person, not his performance as president.

True, I get what you mean there, a lot of presidents' extrapresidential actives where pretty reprehensible, regardless as to whether they were good as presidents; However I was not referring to Wilson's personal views, but his administrations' resegregating of the Department of Treasury and Post Office Department, along with his government's federal civil service beginning the requirement of photos for all resumes specifically so that blacks wouldn't be hired.

Rajeed Stoutman. He saved the economy from the Second Great Depression. He negotiated an alliance with the AI Conglomerate. He even ended the Earth/Centauri War! Sure, he wasn't perfect, and there was that whole fiasco where he got caught cheating on his husband, but he's only human. He's still the best damn president we've ever had.

I'm particularly fond of Jimmy Carter, seriously underrated. He was a good liberal (pro-welfare, etc.), tried to protect the environment, and got the Iran hostages released. He didn't get us involved in any major foreign entanglements, which was great. *cough* everybody else *cough* Up there also are Barack Obama (not best for continuing War on Terror), Bill Clinton (not best for "tough on crime"/1994 Crime Bill), and LBJ (Vietnam takes him out, obviously). McGovern and Dukakis would be up there if they had won. >:(

Some people don't view politics through a prism of a dichotomic "YOU'RE WITH US OR AGAINST US" on a couple of idpol issues.

Shocking, I know.

I think people seriously overrate Kennedy. I don't hate him, I thought he was a fine president, but I feel policy wise he didn't really do much other than take a hard stance against the Soviets and take responsibility for the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. I feel people only like him for his young charm and inexperience, and the fact he was assassinated in what continues to be one of the greatest conspiracies of all time.

FDR was a piece of shit who prolonged the depression, tried to pack the Supreme Court with lackies who would okay everything he wanted, tried to tax gun rights out of existence for everyone except the rich, used the government to attack his political opponents, established fucking concentration camps for people who were the wrong race etc etc. The only thing FDR deserved was a bullet to the head, he's easily one of the worst presidents we've ever had.

Well, he did pass tax cuts and handle the Cuban Missile Crisis well. But I agree that he is often overrated.
