The fact they were willing to fight is pretty clear indication they considered it theirs, which meant yes, it was their land, and no, it's not their fault that some white people with guns decided they wanted their land and weren't taking no for an answer, or that said white people decided said natives were trash to be cleared off of the land said whites wanted.

As to not wanting your country to end up like the natives, most of the ones you're treating as threats aren't interested taking your land or ruling your country. Backwards isn't a race its a correct statement to call a backwards culture or civilisation backwards not a race. The natives varied per tribe and some of them were very brutal and warlike and their brutality was shocking for the Europeans while some were peaceful but had a culture that was stupid like the Caribbean natives that Columbus conquered. As I have said earlier, chances are he had meetings with school officials in an effort to deal with his behavior, and he refused to back down or cooperate, leading to harsher punishment.

From how I understand punishments go, or for atleast my school is you give a relatively minor punishment then you up it if he's caught again. I didn't see them do that for this instance.
