Guilty fast food pleasures

Postby Katganistan » Sun Jan 28, 2018 11:11 am

I think we can all agree that fast food is, as Cookie Monster has said about cookies, only a "sometime food". It's not healthy (generally speaking) and the quality of food you can make for yourself is much better.

Some families, especially impoverished ones or one where parents work crazy hours, depend on them very heavily to feed their family. For others, like me, it's an occasional thing or a tradition: for instance, my fiance and I always stopped for Taco Bell at 1am after attending a six hour long DnD game at a friends' once a month.

I rarely go to fast food -- perhaps once every six months? but when I go, this is what I get:

  • My favorite meal at McDonald's is actually an Egg Mcmuffin, orange juice, and a hashbrown. I like it lots better than their burgers, tbh. If I must get a burger, it's a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, and fries.

  • My fave at Roy Roger's is a Roast Beef and curly fries. At the fixin's bar I put on banana peppers, onions, and pickles, and bbq sauce. I also dip the fries in bbq sauce.

  • My fave at Burger King: Original Chicken sandwich and fries. My, it's shrunk in the last two years, though!

  • And Taco Bell. That's really a 'nostalgia/tradition' one for me about a happy time in my life. I always get the big beef burrito supreme, and a soft taco supreme when I go.

So: What do you think of fast foods? Is there a particular brand or type you like? What's your go-to meal when you go to a fast food place?

I really don’t care for most fast food places. The extent of it for me is places like Subway and Chick-Fila and such.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

I occasionally go to In&Out for a cheeseburger or get a sandwich at Subway.

That accounts for most of my fast food consumption.

Same. I will occasionally eat off the McDonald’s breakfast menu or their burger menu

I can pretty much live without fast food - with one exception. There's a fish and chip shop in a market town near me and, when I'm there (about once every three months), I can't resist a gluten-free crispy battered haddock, chips and mushy peas.

That's about it.

Gluten-free fried fish? O tempora! O mores! If you're going to indulge in a guilty pleasure you don't try to make it better with gluten-free batter. That's like ... like ... ordering rum and Diet Coke. Or baking cookies with Splenda. Or ... any of that.

I do like a McDonalds quarter-pounder with cheese and fries. Used to like Whoppers quite a bit but there's no Burger King near me.

I'm coeliac. If I don't eat gluten free, I don't eat at all. :p

And I agree that rum and diet Coke is heresy.

Special mixed meat in Cantonese sauce with half egg fried rice and half chips from my local Chinese takeaway. I could eat it for every meal if it didn't mean I'd die.

My sympathies -- I've a cousin who deals with that. In an Italian family where pasta was a staple it was a huge problem until she was properly diagnosed.

Fortunately, now that it's become better known, there are pizzerias in my area that do a rice flour crust, and bakeries that also have gluten-free selections.

I like fast food, though I rarely eat it, maybe once a month if that. I'd partial to McDonald's chicken McMugget's and sausage McMuffins myself.

Five guys Cajun fries. May my heart forgive me.

My problem with Five Guys is that by the time I get to place my order I've usually eaten enough peanuts I'm not hungry anymore.

Yes, true. God forbid anyone with a peanut allergy come within a mile of the place, but I love peeling them out of their shells and eating them while I wait.

Granted, most of my fast food choices are when I am travelling or away from home and haven't any idea of what's good.

Then the "known quantity" becomes preferable: and I will go to Perkins, or Cracker Barrel, or Denny's because I know it's not GREAT but it's not BAD either.

Oh, I forgot IKEA.

I guess that's a fast food place right? At least that's where 90% of IKEA shoppers end up, especially those who haven't bought anything after browsing the Luxembourg-sized stores for 2 hours. Yeah I do that sometimes.
