The limit is arbitrary. The mods decided upon it, not the coding.

Obviously, though the limit is present for a reason that has to do with... maybe not coding, but also related to tech anyways.

Many moons ago, TETs were allowed to exist until they reached one thousand pages. The code behind this forum didn't cope well with such bloated behemoths, which apparently slowed things down or something. Since that wasn't desirable, it was decided to keep things more manageable by not allowing any thread to continue for much longer after the 500th page.

That's about when we had a lot of good people in here and managed to get to 1000 pages in what, a week maybe? Two weeks?

You wouldn't have liked the early TETs, they were a hyperactive mess.

Nah, TET wasn't a great place for conversation then. Quote trees the size of skyscrapers and it moved so fast by the time you got a reply out to somebody at least a page had passed.

Compact and steady. Beautiful.

Single word responses to the quotes mentioned by Gallade were commonplace. Single word responses were commonplace in general. But it wasn't all bad, for there was also a lot of snark. Not that the moderators were charmed by this liberal use of caustic sarcasm, but moderators are a tough crowd to please by default.
