Why is this a thing? Why the heck do American teenagers do weird challenges like these? Is this just overblown media hysteria as usual?

I don't know. I just don't know. The thing is, Tide Pods are neither the first nor the only detergent to be packaged like that. No other brand or type of detergent has gotten this kind of attention; the problem with teenagers eating Tide Pods is not lack of warning labels or possible visual similarity to Jello. Tide Pods aren't even the first deadly internet challenge. The problem extends beyond teenagers being stupid or thinking they're immortal. I think society collectively needs to take a step back, look at the evidence, and find a way to communicate to people who would otherwise find themselves drinking kerosene to get more subscribers on YouTube that self-worth is not determined by 'likes' or 'upvotes.' It has to start at the top, with the people that these kids look up to.

In terms of limiting the ability of these things to spread, I think the only real way is to prevent teenagers from using social media to gain popularity, which is practically impossible. You could try to prevent teenagers from having followers or from earning money from their videos, but they could very easily lie about their age. It's a societal problem, not a problem that can be fixed by increasing regulations.
