I think this is the first case, that I know of, where people are willing to poison themselves for social validation on a widespread scale.

Teens have been doing it with alcohol for decades. While not as blatantly toxic as laundry detergent pods, plenty if idiot teens have given themselves alcohol poisoning for the sake of social approval and acceptance among their peers. =/
