Teens have been doing it with alcohol for decades. While not as blatantly toxic as laundry detergent pods, plenty if idiot teens have given themselves alcohol poisoning for the sake of social approval and acceptance among their peers. =/

A fair point.

Sometimes being a deeply social species has immense drawbacks. Teenagers happen to be one.

And people who think it's learned? More like a lack of learning made them that stupid. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

These two were the main ones I was thinking of, although I must confess to being guilty of the latter back in the day.

Also, it's pretty fucking amazing that a trend of eating of goddamn Tide Pods is the first thing to ever establish a general unity among the various political factions of NS General.

I was working on a theory that the internet would argue about anything, but no, we seem pretty united that eating Tide Pods is a very bad idea.

As much as I love tide pod memes, parents and mentors really ought to teach children better than to eat tide pods. That's where you start with this: urging parents to get it into their kids' heads that tide pods are toxic.

huh...so that's what those tide pod memes were about.
What would things have been like if every security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? Or if during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? The Organs would quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!

They're teens doing this, though. They are, or at least should be, well aware why eating detergent is a bad idea. This should really go without saying.

You can't assume that teenagers know this stuff. Hell, I would not be surprised if tens or even a hundred thousand American adults do not know eating tide pods can kill you.

I'm sure they know it's bad for them. Their thinking is probably something along the lines of "hey, there's no way it's that bad, right? It won't kill me."

Given we have a literacy rate of 99% and basic logic dictates not eating things that are non-food, that's a bit of stretch. If we're assuming teenagers are this dumb, nevermind adults, than we've got a whole lot bigger issues to deal with.

Literacy and using it as to understand Tide Pods are dangerous are two different things. Common sense ain't so common anymore.

So this is the latest "Teenagers do insane things holy shit!" fad. I'm sure that, unlike every other time, society will collapse.

No, because if they are literate, then they can read the warning labels on the package. Furthermore, they're not doing this on their own, as OP stated, they're doing it to get views on Youtube which shows full well they know how dumb what they are doing is.

Given that it's printed on the back of the container that it is poisonous, at this point it's just natural selection.
