I think plants are more distinctly "beings" than Fungi.

We're animals. But we rightly elevate ourselves in estimation over all other animals. We're the only animals that seek to progressively uplift themselves and their material conditions through deliberate and conscious programs of action across multiple generations. We're sort of a big deal.

We're animals, arguments that we are not usually rely on the pretentious sophistry of speculative philosophy.

Hello,

I am a Christian who believes in Creationism.

1. I believe in God
2. He created the Universe in 6 days
3. He created man in his likeness ( so we are not animals)
4. He gave us dominion over every beast
5. The Great flood happened (reason for extinction of dinosaurs)
6. The Earth is about 6,000 years old

Nope. Instant fail, as there are no signs of human remains in the same fossil areas in which dinosaur fossils have been found. So that instantly debunks the myth that humans and dinosaurs lived alongside each other. Also, the fossil remains have been confirmed by numerous different tests to be millions of years old, not thousands. Again, the universe has been shown to be a lot older than that by numerous different tests.

When Christian theology tries to account for the existence of the dinosaurs, it fails miserably. It punches a huge hole in the accounts given in the Old Testament.

Going based off the title, since the OP seems confusing AF, we are both animals and beings.

We may be wise, and we may have consciousness, but we are still animal-like in our behavior.

I am a believer in cladistic phylogenetics. According to this system of taxonomic classification, organisms may be categorised according to their descent from a common ancestor. If one acknowledges, say, chimpanzees as animals, and dogs as animals as well, then by definition all descendants of the last common ancestor of chimpanzees and dogs must, by definition, be an animal.

Obviously Animalia is not limited to the common descendants of dogs and chimps, but if two species are regarded as members of the same clade then any other species belonging to that clade must therefore be a member of that clade as well. As such, it is easily demonstrated that humans are animals by taking any two animals whose last common ancestor is also an ancestor of Homo sapiens. We know Homo sapiens shares a common ancestry with chimpanzees and a whole host of other animals once you go back further in the family tree because we have fossil and genetic evidence to support the hypothesis.

Basically, this is a long-winded way of saying that modern science unambiguously regards humans as animals. All the pseudo-philosophising on the internet isn't going to change that.
Suicune wrote:Yeah we're animals. Due to evolution, we're currently the most sophisticated animal on the planet.

By what measure are we the most "sophisticated?" We certainly don't have the most sophisticated genome, and there are many animals capable of doing things we are incapable of. "Most sophisticated" implies we are the most "advanced" of animals, a concept alien to our current understanding of how evolution functions, or at the very least the most complex- an assertion that requires some pretty impressive evidence to support.

Yes, the only thing that we share with animals is literally the definition of being an animal.

Sophisticated was a poor choice of word. I'm not sure exactly what word I meant to use, I was generally referring to our intelligence and society in general.
