A government shutdown should not be used for political gain. I was against the 2013 shutdown by Republicans with an excuse of "healthcare," but I am also against the Democrats here using DACA as a way to hold the budget hostage. The DACA deadline isn't until March, and even Trump said that he would extend it if necessary. Why would the Dems not want to pass this? The shutdown in 2013 helped the economy lose 24 Billion Dollars. Now with an even more robust and booming economy, it will surely cost more if it is around 2 weeks like in 2013. Hopefully, this shutdown won't happen.

No, the Republicans would.be doing it, again, and for the same reasons: they don't have the votes to get what they want, so they take the budget hostage and demand the right to essentially use it as a means of legislating from the hip while wailing about how those mean Democrats are hurting our veterans/children/whatever, even though Republican incompetence and malice are the only reason those issues are in play.

CHIP expired in September, the Republicans (who I remind you control every branch of government) have refused to do anything about it for exactly this reason, so that that they could use it as a threat and line of attack on the Democrats in this spending fight that they knew was coming.

The Democrats position is the same now as it was last time: Pass a clean spending bill, behave like adults and bring other issues to the floor normally.

Republicans don't want to do that because their entire legislative strategy hinges on completely freezing the Democrats out of the process, but they blew that wad on tax "reform", so now they're resorting to blackmail via budget rather than having to actually negotiate and compromise with Democrats.

We have two hours and one minute until shutdown. Trump has said that he will veto unless he gets his wall, and the Republican Leadership is doing everything they can to shift as much of the blame as possible to the Democratic leadership, meanwhile the Democratic Leadership is simply not willing to go along with what Trump, McConnel and Ryan are trying to ram down their throats.
The last government shutdown lasted for 16 days, that was under a president who eagerly wanted the shutdown to end and Republican Party Leadership in congress who at the very least actively had control over the people, which McConnel and Ryan can not honestly claim to have. A shutdown is pretty much inevitable at this point, and unfortunately I can easily see it lasting more than a month.
