You say that now, but my cousin has 2 kids names Tom and Harry. You better believe I'd pay for a third to be called Richard...

What?

'Time limit' for naming a child goes from a minimum of 6 months in Australia to a maximum of never receiving a legal name in Germany.

My dad was named almost a full year after his birth.

42 days in the UK, albeit the fines are so small for not following this guideline that it's basically forever.

I can't find any relevant information about a federal US law regarding naming customs, so I can only assume it is your own discretion as well, so long as you aren't rushing to get a Social Security number. I bet the Amish can survive from cradle to grave with no legal name.

A few pointers first:

The US is a federal government so the states have way more power than in the UK or Poland
Theoretically each state sets its own naming requirements, however because social security is mandatory at birth all naming limits are generally at birth to just a few days after

Social Security is mandatory and automatic. You have to fill out an exemption form before your kid is born if you don't want a social security number, however exemptions are extremely rare.

So like I said earlier, around here it's generally at birth or before it.

And what happens if you don't get a social security number for your child.

Depends on who you are marketing too. If NationStates posters are your target, clearly me. If you are looking for semi-afffl8unt gamblers, go with the Atlantic City pedicabs.
The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

You only have an incentive to influence things that interest you. No interest? No incentive. No influence. Are you interested in making sure that some baby has the most useful name? If not, then you'd have absolutely no incentive to influence the baby's name.

What if no one invests?

Then the actual demand for all the potential names will be unseen and unknown.

You should start a website where people can list and rent signature space. Let me know if you need a hand coming up with the most useful domain name.

Who is going to bother renting their signature space? People who need the money. They need the money for food, rent and tuition. Why wouldn't you want to help start a website where people could exchange their signature space for food, rent and tuition? Why wouldn't you be down for the cause?

Noooot sure if serious or just using as an example for the sake of the argument, but quick reminder that users actually engaging in this would be violating the site rules pertaining to commercialism, particularly the bit about selling accounts. (Though not explicitly worded as such, selling/renting forum sigs, nation fields, region names/WFEs/dispatches/etc would still run firmly afoul of this.)

Boaty McBoatface. That was the name chosen by the British public when asked to name a new scientific research vessel in April 2016. And of course, it was. It’s funny! You see, when you ask a lot of people for input on a topic that is not that important to them you’ll get a great deal of silly inputs. — Aran Rees, The stupidity of crowds
?

But the underlying assumption is not true, here.

Most people do not have stupid names, ther'es nothing inherently dumb about naming someone 'Bruce', 'Sheila', or 'Catherine', or even some strange name (unless, I suppose, they're literally named Adolph McKillJews Hitler).

Moreover, there's nothing wrong with Boaty McBoatface.
